Just bought a ej20 longblock..
I wasn't expecting this. Just picked up a jdm ej205 from a manual car based on timing belt guide, non avcs. And I was expecting to have to swap the crank and driver's upper cam sprockets but they are identical. I'm pretty sure the car was formally a twin turbo bc of the driver's side head having oil and coolant holes that have been plugged. This engine even has the oil cooler and proper water pump port that is on the usdm models. Can anyone tell me what this came out of and why it has the usdm style parts?

There was a 205 that came out of some WRX wagons and early Foresters that were essentially the same as the USDM 205 with one exception, they didn't have coil packs. It was the basis for the USDM 205.

This one had coil packs that are where the valve covers are, not on top. I've been doing some reading though and I think I've narrowed it down to it being an ej208 from a legacy b4 rsk. Those are the only pics online of jdms that I've seen that have the oil cooler and the same color plugs and it being a twin turbo which were only ever in the legacy. I hope my tuner can work with this engine.

That's the engine I was thinking about as well. Some people do the twin turbo conversion so I wasn't putting to much thought into that but if all the other pieces match the 208 then it sounds like it's what you have.

Not sure what the cams sensor pickup looks like, compared to USDM ej205. I would take a look at them so you know if you must swap cams or not. Someone may also know this info and chime in or have a post about it somewhere

what I've noticed is that the sensors on the JDM version are red/orange and the USDM's are black. I will be changing these. As far as the cam sprocket if you take the sensor out and look through the little peep hole you can count the "lines" that the sensor reads on the back. I think some of the jdm engines have multiple lines like maybe 5 or 6 and the usdm has only two. as far as swapping the cams themselves, that shouldn't be necessary and haven't heard of such things.

The ecu is going to translate those slots on the cam and the ecu is tasked to interpolate that. If they are different I am doubtful the factory USDM ecu will be able to work. Although the JDM ecu may plug and play. I know the JDM ej205 is plug and play with the USDM ej205, but the ej207 is plug and play without avcs. The ej208 is an entirely foreign engine for me in this department; I am not sure what applies.
