Default Help! Headers and cams questions

So, my next mods are going to be headers and cams, so I thought I might wanna get some advices from you guys. Planning to get a EL header, I have seen a lot of header out there, but most ppl are using mostly rallitek, cobb or borla. Why are ppl using these headers? Are they the best headers in the market? What about fujisubo or zerosports, they are expensive and is very famous, aren't they suppose to have excellent headers?.......As in cams, delta cams seems to be relatively cheap comparing to cobb's cams, does that mean cobb is better than delta or is it just the price difference?? I drive an 06 2.5i if that helps. I dun mind paying more for extra performance, but really need to get this clear in my head so that I dun hv to pay a whole lot more for something that have the same or similar performance value. Thanks you

In case you haven't seen it, the NA Power White Paper thread is linked below. However, you do sound somewhat knowledgeable on the subject, so:

Anyone have experiene / advice for this guy? FWIW I can tell you from what I've read the Delta cam is a regrind (weld on material and grind down) whereas I don't believe the Cobb is, it's a new cam altogether. Some people don't think regrinds will hold up as well, but Delta has gotten good reviews on here.

Incorrect. The Cobb cams are also a regrind. They are working on new billet cams for the WRX and STi, but us RS guys still get the regrind. And the Cobb Cams= Web Cams. It's the exact same cam, but about $50 cheaper if you buy it from Cobb. And there's nothing wrong with a reground cam...

Just an FYI, the Delta doesn't actually weld on more metal to your cams, only grind metal off. There is enough material on the SOHC to change the profile by removing metal only. I know this for a fact, because I asked the Delta guy before purchasing and installing these cams in my car. I had to adjust the valve lash to compensate. And yes, it affects both duration and lift.

As for the headers, I chose the OBX EL header because they are the same as the rallitek/cobb header, and about 1/2 the price. For the cost difference, even if they are only a couple of HP off of the high priced headers, it was worth it to me. Are cobb better? Perhaps? Are they +$250 better? Not to me.

In the end, Delta cams and OBX EL Header pluss full exhaust back and CAI have turned my car into a totaly different beast. Worth every penny!

P.S. I do get a CEL, but it the "as I expected" miss fire CEL. The delta cam idles pretty rough, and throws a misfire cell about once every 2 months. Plug in my scan tool, check the code, and clear them out. Doesn't bug me at all.

I stand corrected for sure. Matt knows his stuff, and apparently Skidd does too.

Yeah,
I know guys do it with the engine in the car, but I personally wouldn't. These engines come out so quickly and easily, there's no reason not to do this job on a stand. And I agree that any car over 60k mi deserves new head gaskets and timing belt with the cam install.

Cobb and Delta are both regrinds, but how they do it is slightly differently. There are proponents of both methods. There's an old "Cobb vs TWE" where some of us really got into the nitty gritty of it.

As for Zerosports and other JDM exhaust makers? The quality is about the same, and you are just paying for a really cool JDM brand. Regarding size? Don't exceed 2.25" 2.5" tends to really kill off the low end port velocity, and since these engines don't rev to 8000rpms, you never really make up for it...

Has anyone done cams on a 2006 2.5i, which is what the OP drives, with the new semi variable timing? Does that affect the grind? Would you need to use different specs than used on older models?

Might as well do the forged pistons while you have your engine apart
