These photos are from 2011, but they are from my solo road trip from Kansas City to Helena, MT. I had to entertain myself somehow, so I decided to take some pictures of the landscape and my car...while driving! It was awesome. The camera is a Canon Rebel xTi ('06), with a Quantaray 50mm (1:2.8) Marco lens. This camera is really old, but really tough. I take it with me everywhere.

Night shots with a dark car is SO @#[email protected]#$ hard to get right. It's impossible to focus. Knowing what is level and what isn't. Knowing how much light painting to do, and from what angle as to not cause glare... This was the winner from tonight. I'm not that pleased with it.

The blue saturation is through the roof on this one.

From the Mach V spring open house this past weekend. Right before my camera broke. Still going through the rallyx photos to see if any of them are salvageable.

These shots look great! Can you go into your lighting techniques? I have never been able to achieve good results with a black car at night.

It just takes practice. You can get DOF calculators for your phone so you won't have to worry about looking through your viewfinder to focus. I just about never do. I just know that on my 10-20 (the lens I use 90% of the time for night work) at f7 or 8-ish, given the way I compose my shots, everything relevant will be in focus. Also, if you're using a flashlight type of light source, keep it moving, don't let it linger in any one spot for too long or it will burn a bright spot, and be sure you paint from multiple angles to fill in shadows a little. But, yeah, dark cars at night are challenging.

^^^ Good info. I have a T2i, so for focusing I zoom the 'live view' 10x's and manual focus on any spot of light I can find, star, moon, street light, etc. Seems to work well. I am using an LED light bar work light to paint with and I moved around as much as possible, leaving it still on only the darkest spots. I think having a better light and a second set of hands would make all the difference in the world. It's just that every test shot is at least a 30 second exposure, just to make sure everything is level and framed correctly. If it's not then you have to move and start all over again, focus, level, frame correctly, etc then another 30 second exposure. If it does line up and look ok with a 30 second exposure I take a 1 min+ and try some light painting. It is very time consuming for one shot.

If you install Magic Lantern you'll have a DOF calculator on your camera.

^^^It's a firmware editor of sorts. It changes and adds some functions to your firmware. Google it.

I have read up on that actually. The only reason I haven't given it a try is I read that it could possibly brick your camera. I was going to use it for the time lapse setup, but I just ended up buying a remote instead.

Don't want to brick my camera, so maybe I'll pass on it.

Yeah I can tell I overdid it (less is more)
The clarity/sharpness is up a tad high (grainy)

The more I look at it the more I scrutinize it. I def appreciate the criticism

Yeah, the blue is what jumped out at me first. I've been noticing a lot of CA with my 85mm lately. Lightroom doesn't seem to fix it too well either.

Is there something I can do for that? In camera? Photoshop?

EDIT: Found a CA repair in Lens Correction. Checked the box.
