Does anyone else have a really loud whistle on the highway with a Yakima Big Powderhound? I have a Yakima base rack (round bars) with fairing and a Big Powderhound. Here's a cell pic in the only snow of the season so far in Mass.

Inno came in today.

I also got the extended bolts because I have the first gen fat oem cross bars. The bolt hanging on the end is the standard size.

Figured I would post up a random shot of my winter mode with rack. I recently switched from a Yakima 6 ski holder to the Thule Summit box, and it is actually quieter on the highway.

Can I add a roof rack if I don't have roof rails? Mine is a 2013 Base 2.0i Impreza, only the sport edition have rails which cost...$4000-$5000 more...so i went with base model.

Can I add roof rails to my car?

Try one of these on the rear bar: http://www.amazon.com/Yakima-WindJammer/dp/B0042NRVVC
Not sure if it can fit with the powderhound, but I have the round bars and fairing, and threw one of those on the rear bar (had it laying around from another vehicle) and it definitely cut down the noise. More so than placing it on the front bar.

So my wife and I recently took up snowboarding. I already have a rack for my subie, but I'm debating about going ski rack or box. I'm unsure why so many people buy ski racks when you could get a slim box and have a little more versatility (place to throw boots, gloves, layers, etc. with the boards). Thoughts/input on this?

Not a bad idea IMO. It does offer a bit more protection as well, as long as you put your boards in board bags before placing them in the box.

I think price and gas mileage are the factors that come to my mind. also not having to clean my board and just throwing on the roof is nice! Not sure if you want all your gear getting soggy and frozen from snow melting inside the cargo box.

With those being all the disadvantages I think cargo boxes are sweet and would also be super useful for other trips.

Here is an Inno Ridge Box BRA220R-SV on a 2003 WRX
It's pretty small but it doesn't hang over the windshield and still allows the rear hatch, with a spoiler, to open.

Take that useless political bumper sticker off of your hatch. You're giving Jersey a bad name.

i got a box and i only put my boards and boots in there. nothing else. yes the board remains a bit wet after i remove it but that's fine cause it's just sitting in the garage when i'm home.. my boots dont get wet in there.. mind you, the boxes arent air tight so a bit of wind does go inside!

not sure why you'd put mitts or layers in there! use the trunk for that!

in any case, i agree with the disadvantage being price. i was lucky to get mine on sale. i went from a board carrier to a box. no regrets. i dont miss my gear being blasted by sand/dirt from the road!

hope this helps!

I have a set of oem bars, but I just put a set of whispbars on my buddy's a4 with the fat cat rack, it's really low profile and is markedly quieter than most racks I've used in the past.
