Default New STi Slow?

So im in the market for a sporty car and my mind imediately went to the STi because I've been in some super fast ones with very little work done to them. I test drove a 2013 Sedan Base STi yesterday and I must say i was very underwhelmed with the power that it made. Did they detune the new ones or something? I plan on doing an Accessport and an intake right out of the gate but i cant see that making the difference that I felt.

What car are you coming from? That can make a huge difference.

Its been said in other threads, but a down pipe and tune makes a huge difference. Intake, not so much compared to the other 2

I had the same thoughts the first time I drove a stock wrx and STi. I just expected too much based on the cars reputation.

After some searching I bought a Cobb AP and down pipe. The car came to life for sure with just doing that.

The stock tune on the sti's are crap, huge dead spot at 3k Rpm's, you can go stage 1 open source or Cobb and will be a night and day difference.

If you do get a Sti I would look at some E-tunes from torqued performance or phat botti tuning. Be much more responsive the a basic OTS tune.

It was a 5.7 Limited 4x4 that I built the motor a little. Nothing crazy just a cam, some head work, exhaust and intake and she cranked. She was the unfortunate victim of an arsonist the other night so I am searching for a car now

Your not used to the Turbo and how it delivers power compared to your Previous NA car.

I had the same feeling

Whats a realistic power gain from a DP and tune? Does it pull the quarter mile down into the lower 13s or is that being too optimistic?

Depends on how well you drive, but yes. Low 13s are well within reach with a downpipe and tune. The power increase varies, and most vendors provide "stage 2" dyno comparisons. Cobbtuning.com has a dyno database that i go to from time to time just to see what other cars are doing out there. Great resource

Downpipe and a tune is mid-high 12s with a good driver and a decent tune.

To elaborate, the new STi (and Legacy GTs from way back) have a neat 3 map factory tune called SI Drive. In I mode (intelligent, high mpg, limit on max power and when you stomp the gas, it slows that input to the tb), S mode (in between) and S# mode, which goes to fastest throttle response and maximum power. There is a 25% reduction in power in I mode, so if you were there, you'd notice.....uh.....25% less power.

This. When I test drove my car, I didn't switch to S#. Makes a big difference. S feels sluggish after driving in S# regularly.

That would bring power down to...oh, I don't know...CRX levels, for instance.

Anyone have a CRX we can verify this with?

Also remember that changing modes not only "increases/decreases" power but throttle response, etc.

Throttle response and overall driveability on 'I' is appalingly bad. Why would anyone spend the money to upgrade to an STI and drive the car at that setting which makes it feel like a lethargic economy car?

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it yet, but it's the tune. Honestly, if I would have given it some throttle during the test drive then I wouldn't have purchased the car. Once I broke in the car and started doing WOT pulls, I was very underwhelmed. "Thats it?" I thought.

So I just purchased a $26k car that I wasn't happy with so I started doing more research and found out the stock tune was very bad. I didn't think a stage 1 tune would make a huge difference, but boy was I wrong. Threw on a stage 1 TP tune and it literally felt like a different car. It's actually kinda scary how bad the stock tune is. Stage 1 is what the car should have been like from the factory.

So luckily with stage 1, I started loving the car. But I learned my lesson...I will do MUCH more research and do wot pull during a test drive before buying a new car again.

To make a long story short, if it was somehow not possible to change the stock tune, I wouldn't even consider the car.

This is a wrx by the way. The stock sti tune is even worse.

The stock tune flattens the torque curve to offer a more linear behavior, but it's throwing away a lot of midrange torque though. The biggest gain you get from tuning of a little higher overall torque and power but mostly a ton more midrange torque which will make the car a lot more peppy.

Power to weight of your truck vs the stock STI isn't all that different. Straight line acceleration won't be worlds different. You're looking at a 230whp car that weighs a little over 3000 lbs. The stock turbo and a few mods can be pushed to about 300whp and higher is easy to achieve swapping put the stock turbo.

Did you turn the knob in the center to S#?

Stage 1 will make a MASSIVE difference.

Don't worry about it, the car will impress you with very little investment.

Stage2 or go home. Night and day difference. The new STi's with an intake, turbo back exhaust and a good tune should be in the 12's for sure.
