Default help diagnose car prob? (not mine)

Hey guys.

A friend (well, okay, her husband) is having car trouble and I was wondering if you could help diagnose the problem so maybe they could avoid dumping their tax returns into the car (if not necessary).

The car is currently dead, awaiting a tow. All I have so far is "He said it made clunks and jerks forward even when he has the brake down all the way and the "power loss take to dealer immediately" light came on".
(caveat - friend relaying this info is _useless_ with cars, so I suppose something could be lost in translation. She's cute, but automotively disinclined.)

It's a 2008 GMC Colorado, I believe (will get confirmation).

Any ideas? I have no clue, as I'm a noob at internal car bits (seriously, I need to find like an engines for dummies book). Any useful questions I can ask so y'all might have better information for diagnosis?

Without seeing/hearing it in person, it's pretty hard to diagnose through a computer screen lol. Finding out what the DTC codes are would get a good start on getting it diagnosed.

check to see if the MAF SENSOR got unplugged, or possibly could be a bad throttle body, ive replaced a few throttle bodies before on the newer chevy's when it threw a CEL and power loss indication

You got it spot on, actually. It was something with the throttle body (again, from the cute but technically inept girl, she said "throttle something or throttle body something" and they fixed it for $650).

sweet, glad they got it fixed. sorry I was a little late on the response lol.
yeah, once I read that it had the power loss light or indication, I was almost positive it was a throttle body.
Just a fun fact, the reason the throttle body goes bad is not having the throttle body cleaned or cleaning it too much and it damaging the sensors on it.

Do they tend to go bad repeatedly from lack of cleaning (because I would be amazed if he was cleaning it too much)? If so, I can give them a heads up so they can avoid this next time. What's the time difference between a properly maintained throttle body staying good, and a dirty dirty throttle body going bad?

And thanks.

usually everytime you replace the air filter you should do a throttle body cleaning. I would say every 10,000 - 15,000 miles
use throttle body cleaner and toothbrush or rag and just a couple sprays and wide it out
It might hesistate to start after you clean it but it will smooth itself out.
