As for grinders, the capresso infinity or baratza maestro are my top two picks for general drip use. Both are great.

Be sure you aren't pouring boiling water over your grounds, 195-200 only.
What's your website and what is the minimum order size (lbs I'm assuming).

As for the grinders I'll look into them more. I'm a cheap ass sometimes.

RE: water temp I've been heating it up to ~195* prior to putting it in my french press.

Don't be a cheapskate!

The main thing is that you grind to brew, and a cheap blade grinder is far better than pregrinding at the store. But...you get what you pay for, and one of the burr grinders I recommend (not any burr grinder, the $50 burr grinders suck) will increase cup quality a ton.

Here's a baratza refurb:

I've felt like ass all day today. Couldn't figure out why. Just realized I left this morning without coffee

Apparently a coffee deprived brain can forget the coffee. I, on the other hand, had my usual double capp at home, and a double iced capp to go.

Unfortunately, it broke my roasting cycle. I should have been able to roast tonight a few small batches and been good to go, but instead, I have (after making my usual double capp for me and the wife) only enough for about ~16 grams of beans. So, if I roast tonight, it will not be rested enough for tomorrow morning's coffees. I might have to take one for the team and drink the non-rested batch so the wife gets her usual high quality.

No question about not having coffee. The question is how I want my coffee.

Also, the Crate&Barrel insulated stainless travel mugs will hold ice for ~12 hours. I made my iced capp in the morning (6:30) and poured out a few small chips of ice when I got home at ~6:20pm.

So... now I need a grinder -> any sub $30-35 recommendations?
I also need some beans. Nothing crazy looking for something good in the morning for 1-2 cups, not super loaded with caffeine, good flavor, works well in a french press and decently priced.

*steps in to noob suit and prepares for the carnage*
i got a blade grinder from walmart or target or some such....it is JUST ok.....for making drip as it does not grind the coffee into consistant size particles.

french press coffee needs a coarser grind so ya dont get a cup full of mud.....this will happen with a blade grinder and a french press im afraid

try some folgers 'gourmet supreme' in yer french press fer cheap coffee

get a burr grinder

Lol, no problem. You might want to grab a tamper, as well, from WLL or www.espressoparts.com . Ask WLL which size tamper will fit best.

My wife is buying me a Reg Barber tamper for my birthday:

Get one of those long funnels, line with cheesecloth, add grounds, pour hot water through several times, add sweetened condensed milk. They use the same grounds time after time.

At least that's the way they do it in Thailand.

Pulled my first double this morning about 20 minutes after Fedex dropped off the packages (thank you Amazon Sat. Shipping!!!! I'm going to be pulling shots to refine during Monaco F1 all day Sunday). I'll chronicle my follies and refinement for all those who follow. Unfortunately I forgot to time my pulls today as I was too busy trying to take photos and dial in a few things.

First impressions:
Preciso: Set to 9/K
Gaggia: Double using the measuring device provided and the worlds worst tamper.

God damn I missed you espresso. You weren't the best cup, and definitely not the worst either. Mild to low crema, good flavor (Thanks again Nate!), if a bit muddled. Smooth yet thin. No acidity. I think it was underextracted, but not certain by what degree. Will reduce the particle size foremost, try again, and then if needed tamp a little harder.

Coffee: Will try tonite or tomorrow- although I am switching from my cryo stores of CoE to Sumatran which is slowly coming up to temp for Sunday.

Congrats, bro! Post pics of the setup. And tighten up the grind.

The new Ecuador is in, and ready to order. I hear it makes GREAT espresso.

BTW, here's the tamper I'm getting:

I use thumb and forefinger pressure on the base anyway, not palm pressure, so this should work nicely anyway.

How'd I know you were going to pick that one..... I was looking at the shorter one or this one: I still need to call WLL for sizing. It is a true 58mm portafilter.. I measured just to be safe.

What settings would you recommend Nate? Scale down to a 5 or 6?

If you use palm pressure, the short wide head will be much better.

If you're at a 9, try a 7. Finding the basic range of a grinder out of the box takes a bit, so just keep at it. Once you have the basic 1.5-2oz in 20-30 sec, then you can start to play with temp surfing.
