Question New Plugs

I know; I've read a ga-zillion Spark Plug threads, OK! But I went to Kragens to get a set of NGK's for my 98GT, and was told the only plug they listed was a "Laser Platinum", special ordered at $21ea. As I've been unhappy with anything other than NGK's in my previous cars I went ahead and dropped the cash on these. Has anyone had any experience with these plugs? I understand the dealers use an extended life plug with these cars that is also quite pricey, and was wondering if this is it? Oh well, if I can't have a 996 I might as well pay Porsche prices for my plugs!

I knew I could count on you guys to make me feel good about this!! hahahahaha!
Like I said, the only NGK plug they listed for my 98 were these!! I went in looking for the plain jane generic NGK plug!

Peaty, I'd already visited the NGK site, and am not looking for any HP gains.

Guess maybe PT Barnum was right!

Glenn O'Nowtheymademefeelstupid

edit: Just went back to the NGK web-site and did a search for my MY and came up with ONLY the Laser Platinum plug. So, it's not just me guys!!

Glenn, you could always come over here and get them changed - dunno what the NA prices are, but our TTs run circa 18,000yen (including Iri-tough plugs).

So far you are ahead from where I stand

i'm running some kind of ngk copper v-power plugs. they were less than $10 for the set.

but look at it this way - you won't have to go through the hassle of changing them quite as often.

edit:

What you guys dont understand is that NGK has NO application listed for the 2.5 liter. So he would need the part number for the normal plugs.

Okay, decoding the part number they list for yours:

PFR5B-11

P=Premium Platinum
F=14, 19mm reach, 16mm hex
R=resistor
5=heat range
A=firing end design (no data)
11=.44 gap

Compared to the normal subaru plug
BKR6E-11

B=14mm thread
K=hex size 5/8" projected tip
R=Resistor
6=heat range
E= V grooved center electrode 1.5mm insulator
11=.44 gap

So actually they may be the same plug but made of platinum and of a hotter range.

Try BKR5E-11 . Check the length when comparing it to an old one so you dont damage the engine in case its too long and thread it fully by hand the first time just to double check. Im 99% sure this will work!

Perhaps we should cross post this in the NA forum.

Thanks for the breakdown ciper. I'll make note of the recommendation. Curious though why NGK would list no plugs for this engine other than the platinums? Curious now as to what plug is in the car now, and what plug all the guys recommending the NGK's are using.
Think I'll go ahead and try these, as they're bought and paid for, despite any ridicule. A better investment than lit windshield wipers or day-glo pedals or white-face gauges IMO First time plug change on this car for me, so I'll let ya know what comes of it. Thanks again for all the input.

You should read this post http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=223883 in the NA forum

"NGK Part Finder
1999 SUBARU Impreza RS 2.5 H4 EJ25D MPI DOHC

Spark Plug Part No. Stock No. Plug Gap Photo
V-Power BKR6E-11 # 2756 # .044
Platinum BKR6EVX-11 3540 .044

So it looks that some 2.5l have the aplication. Also someone pointed out that those plugs you did buy should cost about 6.50 so you have been cheated.

From the application charts I've seen, the BKR6E-11 is for the 2.2, the 2.5, in the RS. Just because the Legacy, and the RS, use the same engine, doesn't mean that the application is identical. There might be lots of external factors which dictate that the Legacy use the 5 heat range, while the RS uses the 6. While it might work, it's generally not a good idea to stray from the stock heat range. A plug needs to be cool enough to prevent pre-ignition, but hot enough to prevent fouling. A heat range of 6 is going to run cooler, and could foul easier/quicker.

While you did get ripped, nuburu, the cheapest I've found these plugs is ~$11 a plug, not the $6.50 quoted above.

Default update

Just an FYI, Old plugs were the laser platinums!!! Gap worn open to .50 but all looking good as far as combustion color. At lease 30 K-miles on these. Would recommend, after my first time doing plugs on this car that one remove not only the washer bottle on the driver's side, but also the air filter box, top & bottom, on passenger side. 2 clips, 2 bolts and MAF w/hose. really opens things up! Wasn't sure I'd ever get that rearmost plug wire off, and I have small hands!!

The leagcy and RS with the 2.5 motor of the same year (MY98-MY98, MY99-M99, et. al.) use exactly the same motor, and exactly the same plug.

The 99 Legacies had the DOHC motor while the 99 RS had the SOHC. It wasn't until the new body style came out did we receive the SOHC engine.

nuburu2: which is the rear most plug wire? Arent the two rear plugs equidistant?

ciper, the rearmost plug wire I was referring to was on the passenger side. It was fairly easy to grab once I had removed the bottom half of the filter-box, but try as I might I couldn't get any leverage on the "pull' handle on the Magnecor boot until I did! Don't let anyone fool ya!! It IS Hell to get old!!! Didn't want to just grab em with the Channel-Locks!!
I would also add what a God-send the Mechanix gloves my dear Wife gave me for Christmas are!! No more bashed knuckles! Only took them off to hand-thread the plugs in til hand tight.

Glenn O

subarugt, Nice Red!!! Been there twice though, and still think it's hard to beat a White car!!

Subaru GT - I know....MY97 and 98 are DOHC motors, 99 and up are all SOHC regardless of the platform they were in.

This, a 99 2.5 GT Legacy can take the same plug as a 99 2.5 RS

Z1,

The MY 99 Legacy does not have a SOHC engine. It wasn't until 2000 that the Legacy line recieved the new BE/BH bodystyle and the SOHC engine. So unfortunately it is not safe to say that the MY 99 RS and MY 99 Legacy had the same motor. Regardless if the plug is the same btw SOHC and DOHC than they will work btw the two MYs.

Cool, mine is the same color red! Just slightly lighter due to age.

(hehe, I love this picture! and I can get it in 3040 x 2016 native from the fuji s1 pro digital that took it for only 80$)

Okay, I know this thread is a little old, but I had followed it previously and gleaned some information off of it. I thought I'd add some to the discussion.

I now have the NGK Copper V-Power plugs in my Legacy. I used the BKR5E-11 (stk# 6953). I've had them in about a week now, and haven't noticed any strange behavior from them. I've got an autocross this weekend, so I'll have a chance to drive the car pretty hard. I'll let you know if there's any problems with them.

I previously had the Bosch Platinum +4 plugs in the car, and was pretty dissapointed in them from the start. The idle seemed rougher with the Bosch plugs. They all looked good when I pulled them out, though. The car definitely idles smoother now, and I swear it's faster...

I tried the +4's, and got the same results. However, I'm running regular Bosch Platinum's, now, and have been quite happy with them, and they're much cheaper than the NGK's.
