Default Dirty Block & head gasket replacement

I am not sure if this is okay in this forum, but the reason I am at this point is my quest for FI....soooo.....I tried to clean my block off last night with engine cleaner and a stiff bristle brush...3 times...and it still has a dark, grungy appearence to it. Can anyone make a recommendation as to what I should use to clean the aluminum and make it silver again?

Head Gasket Question...what have you used to clean off the old material from the head and block in preparation for the new gaskets? Also, is there an advantage to using studs instead of the factory head bolts?
