Its better that you stay away from T6. Leaves more for everybody else.

I really dont understand what you have against it based on "marketing"? Its been used. Its been proven time after time after time. What has also been proven is that there are more ****ty 5W30/5W40s on the market that people seem to think, based on price alone, that it will perform better and they are, more often than not, disappointed. Just because the peg wasnt designed for the specific hole doesnt mean it cant fit.

Since we're talking oil...
I have 20 qts of Mobil 1 Extended Performace 5w30 down in my basement (leftover from my Xterra) that I will be using up in my new 2012 STI Limited...as to not waste money. Since I'll be changing oil at 3000 mile intervals, and I won't be racing...I'm not worried in the least. I WILL be switching over to the T6 once all my Mobil 1 is gone though. |

Can you really argue with Blackstone labs? TBN still good after 8k miles? Check. Flash point and CST Viscosity after 8k miles still within spec? Check. Theres nothing magical about the oil. Its readily available at almost all WalMarts across the nation and very cost effective at ~$22/gal. Are there "better" oils out there? Probably, but the T6 is easy to find and proven to work well in these engines. We are only "fanboys" because we tried it and it has worked and worked well, and we are only advocating the oil because it works.

Back on topic, thanks for sharing your experience OP. I find it very interesting that the Subaru tech told you to switch to 5W-40 after break-in. There have been reports of some dealerships giving owners crap about using syn 5W-40 (blaming misfires, etc. on the heavier oil) just because the owner's manual states that syn 5W-30 is required . |

If the Mobil 1 was the regular 5w30 I wouldn't chance it, but it's the Extended Performance 5w30...a little better.

If you want to know about oils, and which work well and which don't, go to www.bobistheoilguy.com. There you will get way better information than you will on this site about what works and what does not.
The problem with discussing oil on a specific car forum is you get "forum favorites" based more on what the frequent posters use, rather than what works. In turn, people who know nothing then convert to that oil because if so-and-so says it's good, then it must be ... then they in-turn post about how great it is .. and so on. On this forum, that oil seems to be the Rotella T6. Bottom line is if your using your car as a daily driver, and changing oil less than every 5k miles, there are many many oils that will work just fine for you. |

I just dont understand why people are so adamant to reinvent the wheel here. X, Y, and Z oils are proven to work well and provide lasting protection in these cars, but so many people want to use Q, R, and S because....? I cant find any sort of logic to knowingly use a product that could significantly increase the chances of damaging an ENTIRE engine. Not just pistons/shortblock but turbo and heads... |
