Yes.

Typically you pull the nut off the axle, then pull the long bolt out of the knuckle, then you can push the knuckle out far enough to disengage the outer CV from the knuckle. Then you use a pry bar between one of the diff side bolts and the under side of the inner CV. Don't pry on the diff side cover itself.

Are you pulling the axles, or the diff?

I tend to avoid pulling the axles out of the hubs if I do not need to remove them. There is no rear downside, but I just have an aversion to pulling off the axles nuts...I dunno. I like to zip tie the axle to one of the lateral links before I pop the axle out of the diff, unless I have someone around to hold the axle.

I just need to drop the differential. I'd like to keep axles in the hubs.

Someone said it can be done by dropping the differential without removing anything. Is that possible ?

Maybe you should have asked the real question then?

I don't think there's enough swing in the axles to drop the diff with the axles still plugged into them. If you just want to pull the diff, you can probably disconnect the large bolt, then pop the axle out of the diff end and push out on the knuckle enough to get the axle out. It's VERY easy to tear the seal using this technique so, be careful.

I tried installing a diff once without disconnecting the large bolts, just meshing the axles in on both sides and raising the diff. It was a nightmare, I manage to make it work but, I tore both seals in the process so, I had to take it back apart to do the seals.

You're better off doing it the right way once then trying to shortcut it and ending up doing it twice.

Ya if you are careful you can get the axles out of the diff without hurting anything, and without pulling the axles from the hubs...I have done it 2 or 3 times. You do have to pull against the struts firmly.

Definitely not enough room to do it without removing the lateral link bolt from the knuckles though.

I guess it all comes down to whether you have the socket for the axles nuts and a fairly hefty torque wrench...a new axle nut would not hurt either.

You CAN do it, and its easy.

First drop the diff out of the subframe

Pop the axles out of the diff, notice you can almost get them off of the splines, but there isnt enough slack.

Last put a jack under a rear strut and rotor and jack the strut up untill the axle pops off.

The end

I can see how that would work. I'll have to try that technique next time.

I was able to remove it that way but damaged one of the seals. But I didn't take the muffler off and the left axle couldn't go all the way down when i dropped the diff. i guess that's why i ended up damaging.

You can get the rear diff out without unbolting the axles from the hub. I do it all the time and it's easy. You don't have to unbolt any suspension parts.
