*** UPDATE**** 5/30/11

SEM Trim paint = win.
It's holding up perfect to outdoor parking, weather and the Sun (in PHX), still looks great and matches well.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I recently picked up a 05 STI and have this issue with faded trim on the passenger rear door, its becoming more and more noticeable after I detail the car. I feel like I can see it from miles away since it’s the only shiny chrome'ish trim section on an all black STI.

Any suggestions on what to use to repair/paint? I don't feel like spray paint is going to do the trick, the trim almost feels like it has a rubber texture. If I can't find anyway to DIY, i'll have to check out some body shops.

It looks like the previous owner decided to sand it down or hold a buffer on the trim for WAY to long.

****** 8/20/10 UPDATE ******

SEM Satin Black Trim Paint
Scotch white/gray scuff pads
Multiple light coats (First few coats hardly changed the color, very VERY light coats waitng 10-15min between each)

Once all was dry I finished off with some mothers back to black on the entire piece, results below. It's not perfect but it's much better then it was before.

The picture makes it look a bit more satin/faded then it looks in person. The faded look in the picture can't be seen while looking at it outside, must be the sun angle?

Have you looked into Plasti-dip? It's a spray on paint with a rubber texture.

As much as I am OBSESSED with that stuff (my entire interior is painted with it), I DO NOT recommend it for exterior uses.

The problem with Plasti-dip, is even with good PREP, it will still rub off from constant friction. If you wash your car a lot, imagine what it will do.

Look up Duplicolor bumper coating. It's made for exterior trim.

I used a product called Forever Black on my rear window spoiler. Worked very well though mine wasn't as faded as your weather trim. Might be worth looking into.

Thanks for the tip on Plasti-Dip, I didn't know it faded with heavy friction, I enjoy washing the car so thats probably not a good option.

I did think of bumper coat spray paint, I recently used SEM to paint my gauge pod which worked well. I doubt i'll find a color to match faded/worn black trim, and the texture will probably be different. This may be a last resort, maybe I can get a good fade between the shades of black.

Amazon.com: Forever Black Bumper & Trim Dye Kit: Automotive
Is that actually a paint or like a mothers back to black polish for trim thats just faded?

Edit** Ah, I see its a base and dye although it mentions that it will only adhere to porous plastic, rubber, and vinyl. I wonder if it would stick.

ANY spray paint will work, but the key is prep.

Plasti-dip isn't a paint, it's a coating, which explains, why it doesn't exactly bond to surfaces, but just cover it.

dude yeah, easy fix. Tape off everything around it, except leave some extra black strip exposed and do a 'fade' over it with some flat or gloss black paint.

Pull off the tape and newspaper or whatever and it should look good as new.

I used Plasti Dip on my grille, seems to be holding up pretty well through a lot of washes/summer heat. I just had to do a lot of light coats to get the even finish I wanted.

SEM trim black. Its semi-gloss/satin. Specifically for aluminum/stainless/pot metal trim pieces.

As Da-Risin' said, PREP is everything. tape off everything around the trim. Use a red scotch-brite pad ^ scuff the trim. wipe down with wax/grease remover, let it flash dry. then wipe down again with a dry, link free towel (I like the Scott's Blue shop towels).

your first coat is literally a mist coat. SEM Trim has the equivalent of etching primer built in to the spary can with the paint. So just dust the first to coats. You DO NOT want any coverage the first 2 coats. These coats are setting up the bite for the color. Now after the first to dust coats are dry, lay 2 more medium-wet coats. Letting them dry completely (15-20 minutes between). Now you are looking for coverage.

I have been doing trim with SEM for 20+ years. I have my very first Mustang, the window trims were done in 1990. They still look awesome, the rest of the car is dead, but the trim still looks like the day I sprayed them.

Prep is everything.

after painting my roof rack rails i am going to use the same stuff on my trim. i used duplicolor truck bed coating. it drys very hard and plastic like (not rubbery in any way) it comes in a blue spray can and has a great texture to it.

those "runners" are really easy to take off. just pull the weather stripping out (just pull down and it will fall right out i promise) yjrn remove the screws.

Wait, so the trim just slides off? It looks like the roof trim may be easy to remove, but not the upper door trim as it is a piece of metal. I'm not sure what yjrn means, where are the screws located?

If so that will make me much more comfortable painting it!

just do what i told you.

open your doors and remove the rubber weather striping directly under that metal trim. to do this grab onto the rubber pull down. in side of the metal track you will see phillips head screws. remove those screws and the metal trim of yours that is fading and it will come off.

use paint. i LOVE duplicolor trim paint. perfect satin black finish (looks like its peramently armorall'd. im going to use the duplicolor truck bed coating on mine because i think the texture looks awaome.

plastidip in pure crap and i havent the slightest clue why people started useing it.

so what ever happend? im contemplating painting mine with the truck coating tomorrow. its a "soft" textured coating, not sand paper like the plasti dip crap seems to be. I.E. wont chew sponges and rags when washing the car.

I did not know this. Do you think Plast-dip and other paints are the same way?

I'm done convincing people. I've had nothing but good luck, but I have admitted its limits.

I will post the results soon, they turned out well.

I took the entire weather strip off and used scotch white/grey pads to scuff it up.

I then used SEM Satin Black Traim Paint and did a few lights coats followed by some medium coats.

The texture wasn't quite right and didn't have the factory rubber feel. So I decided to sand it with some 1500 grit, this smoothened it up and made a good match with the factory trim.

The texture is still different if you run your hander over it, but the color is almost dead on, in fact it looks much better than the weathered not painted parts.
