just out of curiosity - the guys that were/are having rough idles, so you notice the voltmeter gauge doing anything funny?

reason i ask, is this sounds exactly like the same issue I am having, only difference is when the car starts to idle rough, my voltmeter starts dipping to about 12v.

other than that, sounds like a lot of the issues are the same.

I have a 2002 2.5 RS sedan, does your advice apply to this model or only the turbo models?

I cleaned it again with MAF cleaner (I didnt have TB cleaner), soaked it and it looked much cleaner the second time around. I put it back in and idle climbed to 2000. I blipped the throttle and it dropped to 1500. Driving around it seemed fine until I came to a stop. RPM would bounce from around 1500 to 2000. Then it held at 2000 and CEL 1507 came on yet again.

Unless there's anything else I should do I'm thinking it's dead. I did manage to find someone in the classified selling whole throttlebodies. I also checked out car-part.com and they're got a load of TB's on sale. They also seem to list "TB valve assembly" which are listed cheaper than the whole TB. Would the IACV be part of the "assembly"?? Having to possibly spend $300 for a new IACV does not bode well with me

well ill b dammed, i thought i was the only guy out there with this problem. it usually only happens when the car has idling for a while in warm/humid weather, or the worst - in traffic. it'll start at 1.5k then eventually raise to nearly 2.5k . ITS DONE THAT EACH TIME i took it to the track!! i deff wanna get that done before i ever take it back to the track. one of these days when i have the free time i will try the throttle cable method or look into getting one of those gaskets for the IACV.

+1 Adjusting cable FTW. Most of cars with this issue I know about needed only cable adjustments

Complete noob here, I am experiencing high idle during big traffic and even popping open the hood after the ride you can feel slack in the throttle cable, but no slack at all in the cruise control. Question is this, which nut do I loosen to add some slack to the cruise control cable? Thanks guys!

Edit: And the cruise control cable is on the left side of the two when facing the car with the hood open correct? Just checking.

Yes. It makes a 180 and goes back to the actuator by the passenger side firewall.

You can verify that is the problem by pushing on the pulley (to the left in the picture) to close the throttle when you have high idle.

I think it is a 10 mm wrench. Loosen the nut closest to the front of the car and play with it to get a little slack and then snug them both up. Takes about 5 minutes.

I am not sure where the recall for the cruise control cable clip goes because I ignored that notice.

Well I just cleaned my IAC tonight. My symptom wasn't high idle but stalling, stumbling and searching for idle every time I clutched in after a long drive in 5th.

Taking it apart was pretty much as stated. I got the rear screw out with vice grips but the front one was too tight. Luckily I had 2 big flatheads and the craftsman fit right in and broke it loose no problem. I laughed as I watched the gasket grow out of it's recesses right b4 my eyes. It was dirty/oily but not so much that it look clogged or stuck. I cleaned it with carb cleaner and q-tips. I tested it with 12v and after it sparked from a wrong connection I got it to move by touching the right one. So I put it all back together and sure enough now I have a high idle and about 20 seconds in it throws the 1507 cel and starts loping. I reset the ecu and wiggle some wires but it doesn't go away. So I pull it apart again and work the valve with a pick. I test it again and proceed to touch the wrong one again and it sparks. But it still moves when I do it right. I put it all back together and it's idling great with no CEL. After the 10 minute gasket bed in drive I cruise home push in the clutch to make my turn and my car doesn't stall. The idle dropped perfectly back to where it belonged. I think it worked. Thanks to all who posted here!

What points do you probe with the multimeter to find out if you have a open circuit or closed.

Im having a high idle problem as well, with white smoke from the exhaust and no boost.
I have a Cobb ap and it threw the cel for "idle control system malfunction"(fail safe)

not sure if i need a new IAC or just need cleaning.

Unplugged the IAC connector and the idle went to normal..plugged it back in and jumped back to 1500.

^^Well i got the new gasket and went with the alky and q-tip method..installed everything..reset the ecu, turn to ON postion, then off(repeat 3times)..started the car and let it run for 10mins. CEL popped on with the 1507 code. cleared the cel and started the car again, idle still 1500-2000..went for a drive under boost and car sounds fine except for the high idle when i stop.
So i think im going to have to shell out $300 for a new IAC.

the question is now..when i get the new IAC is it going to be the part that i removed to replace the gasket or am i going to have to mess with the TB?

Any suggestions for me to DIY.

Thank you.

IDK what part you're gonna get if you order it but you could check out subaruparts.com and see if they show a picture.

I do know that my car did the same thing (popped the code after cleaning). So I took it off and cleaned it again and it had been fine since. Maybe give that a try.

Well unlike you other guys that cleaned the IAC fixed the problem,i had to replace the sensor itself..which was $320 from subaru..checked suparuparts.com to late which had it for less..

But that fixed the problem for me..now i have a normal idle

My friend just bought a 1998 Forester with 204k miles on the body, but engine and tranny were rebuilt less then 1000 miles ago. Hes having this code being thrown, and we were going to clean it out. His isnt high idling, but its actually stalling when the clutch is depressed. The idle will drop down to about 500, and the car dies. This is also happening with my 2005 WRX, so we were planning to clean both of them Tommorow.

Hopefully it works... ill keep u guys posted.

i own a 2002 wrx, ~80k miles, and had cleaned the IACV a few years ago along with replacement of the gasket. Yesterday, the car throws the infamous P1507 code and has the associated hesitation, high/irradic idle, and basically won't drive.

I spent the better part of the day cleaning with anything I had around -- electronics QD cleaner, brake cleaner, another type of electronics cleaner, and acetone -- after probably 2-3 hours and coupious amounts of q-tips, it was better, but by no means fixed.

So I slept on it, and decided to take the solenoid / field coil off of the housing.

After rebuilding it, the internal cylindrical piston should move effortlessly. It should be able to move by merely blowing on the fin (with the feild coil disconnected). If it is not, you haven't cleaned it well enough ANyway, saved me $350... maybe I should start rebuilding these more often.

On another note, it is truely amazing how much this effects throttle response and surging that is so common with these WRX's. Keeping this part clean is essential to maintaining good part-throttle response. It really makes the car feel like new again.

Also, the valve is driven by a magnetic field (hence the term field coil above). Therefore, it is impossible to burn out the stepper motor on the IACV. That is the brilliance behind the design. Of course, on the other hand, its also easier to get gunked up, but at least this design makes it rebuildable.

Default Does the 04 STi have an IACV?

I have looked through this thread and my 04 STi is exhibiting similar symptoms. But when i popped the hood, i didn't see anything similar to the IAC....Is it in a different spot on the STi? Does it even have one?!

Angry iacv

so today i cleaned the iacv and replaced the gasket, no dice. i cleared the cel and primed the fuel pump and let the car idle for like 10 minutes, it was cold so the rpm's were high anyway, they dropped but only to like 1250. i guess i have to replace the iacv.

I just cleaned IACV, had gasket, but reused old one... was good, guess because I replaced last time like 7k miles ago...
Lately RPM was dropping down to around 1000 RPM, and than much slover to 500. It is little better now, but still not linear drop to Idle RPM(500)
