Default OT: WTF is the deal with the Olympics?

Seriously. I didn't want to crap up the thread in the classifieds so here we go.

Why the hell are people willing to spend over $100,000 to watch a bunch of people sliding around on frozen water for a couple days?!

When the Olympics come on TV, I get pissed off because it means my favourite shows won't be on. Am I missing something?

This is true - but its still viewed as pointless by the average person.

Also, for all you know it could be some billionaire in which case this is pretty much pocket change to them.

All said and done, I haven't spent any more on my car than a new mid-range sports car anyway.

true - and its sicker than any mid range sports car too.

Although i do really like the RS4 and C63 - but those are a bit more than mid range. i mean geez - you could practically rent a house for the olympics for that kind of coin!

But seriously tho, if I were a billionaire, spending 2 weeks in vancouver watching some guys in spandex spinning in circles and sliding down hills wouldn't be at the top of my list of things to do.

I mean, if it was as easy to get into as a local fair, I might take a peak, but renting out houses and condos in another city for a month when I could get a better view on my 72" ultra high def plasma TV in my jacuzzi room full of swimsuit models, i dunno. (You can tell I spend a lot of time thinking about winning the lottery )

I can't wait to see some hockey, snowboarding, skiing etc, but I would rather buy a top of the line TV and watch it a home with the PVR. Then spend the big money to see it in person.

I think a better and more comparable example that more people can relate to would be travelling. Say you spend $5000 and go to Europe for a few weeks. After those few weeks are over, you're no longer in Europe but that doesn't mean it wasn't worth it. The same goes for the olympics, they get to take away the experience of having attended. To you (and most of us) it probably isn't worth the cost to rent out a place elsewhere to view them but we don't represent the world. There are plenty of people ready to dish out the coin to watch a few events.

Meh, different strokes for different folks

Some people value experiences more than possessions. Traveling is a good example.

Personally, I place a bit less value on experiences that are arguably more involving on television than in person.

You definately get better coverage on TV, but it's like going to a hockey game in a sense, with the crowd's energy, its a completely different experience. Also, you get to be there in person when world records are being broken, which some think is special.

Oh and bragging rights, not everyone is able to put the time/money aside to attend this sort of event which only comes around every 4 years, so its a big deal.

Personally, I could've gotten tickets, but could care less.

The Olympics are awesome. Summer and Winter.

It is really cool that we get to host this round. I've been to the Calgary Olympics in 88 and the Nagano version in 98. I'm pumped to witness all that is winter sporting in our very own backyard.

No- I don't have any money to pay for the big events... I'll likely be slogging up the hills of Cypress to get a glimpse of the Snowboarding, and getting some cheap seats in the Richmond Skating Oval.

The only thing that irritates me is that we can lobby to fund the Olympics but place more of an importance on the games than with adequately dealing with drug addiction/ homelessness / mental illness on your very own streets.
That pisses me off.

There are some rich Euro folks willing to pay my parents 30K for their Whistler place for the month of Feb. Go figure.

If rich folks want to spend tons on an Olympic vacation, let 'em?

It'll be a crazy month in the Lower Mainland, not just the 2 weeks.

I think most lower mainlanders will do two things:

1- Take a vaction out of town during the Olympics. Mexico is looking good.

2- Hole up in your house with plenty of food and wait it out. travelling around Vancouver is going to be an absolute disaster during that time, as we all know our road network and public transportation system sucks royally.
You won't even be able to drive to Whistler unless you can prove that you have a place to stay and a parking spot to park your car. If you don't have that, you get turned away at Squamish.

werd...it'll definitely be a giant inconvenience.....

but i think 90% of people in vancouver have jobs and other responsibilities that dont allow them to do either of your options...which kinda sucks....

luckily i live in langley in work in abbotsford....but i feel bad for people who work downtown.....

Besides the fact that most people have jobs and or school . . . and In the current state of our economy I am sure nearly everyone is banking as Much time in the office / field as possible !

Ps.
My ex's Father has spent over Half a Million on Olympic Tickets and such. . . . .
Personally I wont spend a penny in support of this event !
I will watch it on TV but IMHO . .
