Default 06 sti ... Stolen cobb, repercussions of stage 2 stuff on stock tune

Ok... So in April of this year my car was broken into and some jerk took my Cobb... The car was rolled back to stock ecu. I have a high flow catted 3" dp and a typhoon intake but all else is stock. Do any of you geniuses foresee any long term effects from being set up this way?

I think you might be able to get away without a tune for only the intake. A lot of people say that you need a tune for a downpipe though. Call cobb up and see what they have to say. Personally, I'd just get more mods and get a custom tune specifically for your car instead of buying a new AP and getting the OTS maps.

Negative on both. Intake (most) requires a tune to avoid running lean. Downpipe requires a tune. Both of them together, you're asking to destroy your engine.

Ok... So I left off a bit of info because I didn't want to skew your replies...

The car was broken into about 6 months ago and I didn't think about any possible consequences for running the stock map with my stage 2 hardware... The other day I noticed that it was smoky while idling... Rev the engine, big puff of smoke. Pull over to the roadside and its not doing it. I then thought that maybe it was just a piece of plastic that I picked up and got on somehing hot... But then a day later and its doing it again intermittently. It doesn't appear to be related to how hard I push the car. No degradation in power, boosts like normal. But that last respnse really has my heart sinking...

What would be your next steps? I could shell out for a leakdown but is like to know of there's anything a bot more simple that I could do to diagnose.

Sigh..

That sucks. Unfortunately Subaru engines are very sensitive. If you have the stock parts, go back to stock and get a leakdown ASAP. In the meantime, remove the oil filler cap while the car is idling and see if there is any smoke coming out. If you see any significant amount of smoke your fears can be confirmed. :'(

Also, turbo seals are a possibility based on the symptoms you describe. If you remove the downpipe after the car sits for a while, you may be able to see some oil in the hotside. This is hit or miss though as it burns off very quickly. I would still recommend what i said above, but if the leakdown + compression comes back clean, take a closer look at the turbo. Also if you have a change, pop the intercooler off and see how much oil is in the Y pipe and the throttle body coupling. A little is normal, but if you see pooling or you're able to drain oil out of it, that definitely indicates a problem.

Thanks mechatricity,

I bought a leakdown tester and will be sorting this out ASAP.

If someone stole your accessport out of your car... How did they get your keys? I guess I must have missed your explaination on how the AP got uninstalled in the first place.

Too many missing details, I call BS.

i've burned up a turbo already once this year due to a cracked oil pickup tube and got to experience all of these joys first hand already... can't wait to do it again.

When i'm putting the stock exhaust back on i'll be looking for blowby. may as well pop the intercooler off then, although I'd assume rear seals since i'm seeing smoke.

Any thoughts as to why it may be intermittent? Could it be related to the lean nature of closed loop?

haha... no bs. ok so the whole story is: my car got the oil pressure light. Took it to the Subaru dealer in Houston and while on property the Cobb was taken along with my headunit. They discovered my oil pickup tube broken and replaced it (with a killer bee that i supplied) I was unclear on the extent of damage just knew it had had no oil pressure. Then i got my first chance to really drive it after it had oil pressure. and immediately noticed how much it was smoking. The dealer said that based on how smoothly it was idling, it was probably not the engine but instead the turbo. Not an incredible amount of turbo shaft play but enough to cause concern and line up with the symptoms. Because of the break in i wasn't too interested in keeping the car there to let them actually make the turbo change, so i bought another turbo off the forum and put it on myself. imagine my surprise when, a week later it was still smoking like no one's business and not making full boost (only about 12 psi on a stage 2 cobb map). So at this point, i gave up and took it to the tuner where a leak down confirmed that my engine was very healthy. what had happened was that I had soaked my cat with oil while the turbo was blown and it was just burning off. We were unsure why the car wasn't making boost but he believed that it was also due to oil build up. Since the boost was low i thought that maybe the dealer had actually broken into my car and unmarried the AP but the tuner confirmed that it was still installed (not sure how to do this but it involved his open source software). I had accumulated a few parts that i wanted to get put on and then the plan was to dyno tune, but he told me he couldn't do anything with the AP still married. So i packed up the ECU and sent it back to Cobb and they rolled me back to 0. it took it a few weeks to fully stop smoking and to start hitting 14 psi but it did eventually do that. The intention was to then go right back to the tuner and get tuned but some personal stuff came up and since the car was running ok i let it go. it was april of this year when all of this happened. I guess i made a mistake in assuming that I could leave the aftermarket stuff on.. it didn't even occur to me that this was bad... ugh..

So you asked for more detail.. there it is. sorry for the book. I think i know what i need to do now, and appreciate mechatricity for hearing me out.

so ur saying that before you handed your keys to the dealership. ap was still married and present? and after letting them do ur work. u found it unmarried and missing. clearly and obviously one of the tech guys knew this was valuable and you have money to blow and took it anyway. right there is your thief.

haha, no... the jackass just too the handheld part and left it married. i thought i wrote that. sorry for the confusion. i had cobb reset my ecu so that i could have the tuner tune me. then i let too much time go by with my stage 2 stuff on and a stock map.

this whole situation gives my wife even more ammunition for why we should get rid of the sti (she has hated it from day 1). 6 years later and I still love it (when it works).

You could just smarten up and stop bringing the car to the dealer... Also, VF turbos are cheap. You can get one used for less than $500.

Instead of asking the infinite wisdom of the derpwebs... Why not just bring the car to your tuner and ask him what's wrong. OR, find someone like me that is local to you, who can go through the car for a few beers... I personally wouldn't be stealing your ****, because I've got some actual integrity.

That's it... I'm coming to Rhode Island. with beer of course. Trust me, I'm done with the dealer. I was in a real pinch though since it's my daily and they do free loaners.. i have yet to run into a tuner who will do that.

The real rub on all of this is that the dealership is in a really nice area where crime is relatively low. The tuner on the other hand (the only one I know of in Houston) is in a very rough part of town...

Well you're kindof in a tough spot now. You probably shouldn't be driving the car (if you can help it) until you have a handle on the issues. I would prepare yourself to spend some money to get things done right. If you don't trust your current tuner, consider getting some consultation from AWDtuning in Dallas. They tend to be a little more "personable" than Cobb and would be glad to help you work through any issues.

An update: both driver side cylinders are leaking down at 4%... Good there. Passenger are leaking at about 11 and 14%. I can't hear anything in either the intake or exhaust so I'm guessing the heads are in good shape... Majority of the air was going into the crank case. If it was one cylinder id say ring but two. That's odd. Anyone with thoughts on this?
