Default CEL, Brake, battery lights on and no power steering?

Weird problem. I was exiting from the highway when I noticed the e-brake light and battery light come on and the power steering decreased. The CEL was on but it's always on due to the turbo kit. In any case, the car did not stop running (even though the battery light was on) and I checked the e-brake (it was not pulled up or anything). Could the alarm system be affecting the electronic systems? I'm really worried since I still have to drive home at night. Help!

Sounds like one of your accessory drivebelts. There are two drivebelts coming off the crank pulley: one runs your A/C compressor and the other runs your power steering pump and alternator. Did you pop your hood and take a look? The latter belt may be very loose or it may have broken.

If the belt is indeed gone, you'll need to fix it ASAP; even if you think you can handle having no power steering, without a running alternator your battery will die after an hour or so, since it's not meant to handle the load of ignition.

ron it sounds like your alternator died, that or the belt launched. check the belt if it's okay, replace the alternator.

They have very good points...the only thing I could think of that would effect both the alternator AND PS pump at the same time would be that belt. Check it ASAP!

Thanks guys. You were right. It was one of the belts that was loose. Initially when I checked it, everything seemed fine. I called my friend who's an engineer and he also suggested the belt. When the car wouldn't start, I checked again and sure enough the belt was REALLY loose and was on the verge of coming off. Everything was replaced but now the car won't start. I checked the connections to the battery (Nino's Rally Cell) and they're tight. All I get when I insert the key in the ignition is the beeping that a door is left open. No lights anywhere came on including the dome light, ashtray light, gauge cluster lights, etc. I checked the battery and replaced it with the OEM (which was fine before) and nothing. I looked at the fuses and they seem fine. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it and nothing happened (my Viper alarm usually goes off when I do this but it didn't this time). I checked both batteries and they're fully charged. I did notice that when I tried jumpstarting both sets of batteries I didn't see any sparking from the terminals which almost always happens when I jumpstart cars. I'm really frustrated and am seriously considering getting another car. Help!

I put in an alternator today I bought from AxisPowerRacing. Ron (the owner) told me it had only 100 miles on it. I looked at it closely and it seemed to be almost brand new. Wouldn't the car at least turn over if the alternator was bad but the battery fully charged?

ron it sounds like both of your batteries are dead, did you OEM battery sit on a concrete floor for a good period of time?? if the answer is yes then i'd say it's dead as well. good luck.

It's possible your ignition switch is going bad. With the alternator not running, more current was running through the ignition switch than it was designed to handle. If you think you're up to the task, you could try to bypass the switch to start the car manually. Or you could just take it to a shop for a half hour of diagnostic labor.

Jeremy,
Wouldn't a dead battery be jumpstartable? In any case, I checked the lightweight one and it had a full charge on it. The OEM battery was stored on a hardwood floor in my closet since October 2002 so I don't think it was dead when I put it in. I'm going back this afternoon to put in the lightweight battery and recharge the OEM (if needed). Anyone know of a Mitsubishi Galant VR4 for sale ?

Just an update. I took the car to Bredemann and they found a slow-burn 80 amp fuse that burned out. Almost everything works now except for some interior lights.
