![]() Hello:
First time here on the recommendation of an enthusiast. Do I have a lemon? Wish I could start a new thread, but am not allowed to do that until I have at least three responses, I guess--at least that's the message I get when I try to. I have a 2006 naturally aspirated 2.5L Legacy Limited sedan that has had several continuing problems, one dealing with the automatic transmission, one with air conditioning and one with body squeaks and rattles. For this comment, I will only address the air conditioning. I will address the other two on other threads. Regarding the air conditioning, with automatic climate control, I don't believe it has worked since new. On very hot days, it just doesn't do the job. Do these cars just have small evaporators, or is there something the dealer is missing? At 1639 miles, I took it to the dealer to be checked out. The technician reported the system had 1.33 lbs of freon and should have 0.95 lbs, evacuated and refilled with the proper amount. After tolerating substandard cool, I took it back at 3363 miles. The report said that it was working better than normal. Huh? I asked the technician for the service instructions for verifying operation. He left and returned with a FAX of the procedure, I read it, and it seemed like the system was, indeed, working fine. Assuming there must be some sort of design flaw, maybe with the automatic climate control, I began a chain of communication with Subaru Corporate. Eventually, they sent me a newer service sheet, I read it, and found that the technician was taking the outside temperature as the reference, and should have been taking the inlet temperature at the passenger side of the console. Then, I realized that when he demonstrated the system operation on the previous visit, he had closed all the vents except the one where the thermometer was. According to the service procedure, all vents are supposed to be open. Finally, at 36,364 miles, and during a hot spell, I returned to the dealer and asked once again to have the system looked at, including damper movement inside the duct system. New technician. New diagnosis. He found that the system had only 0.62 lbs of freon and stated it should be between 0.81 and 0.95 lbs. He evacuated the system and filled it with 0.95 lbs. He also showed me a different service procedure with the required gas pressures in the system and the ones he was getting. I have to admit, the system is colder, but on days over 80 degrees, the system needs to run in recirculating mode at very noisy high fan speed. Anybody out there have something they could tell me about this? Thanks for your advice. Regards, Jack

In order to get maximum cool, you need to run the a/c on recirulate. The lower the fan speed, the cooler the air will be. (The air remains inside the system and can cool more on lower fan speeds.) Put a thermometer in one of the air vents and see what the temperature is after about 3 or 4 minutes, on recirculate and on fan speed 2 or 3. 60 degrees or colder is about ideal. You say that the fan is loud on speed 4? Are you referring to the air coming out of the vents, or is it making a rattle or another noise? Have you ever replaced the cabin air filter? (the one for the air conditioner) It should be done once a year, at least. If the system, on the last check, was low on freon, then you have a leak somewhere. A/C systems just don't loose freon. Have them add dye to the system and see where the leak is coming from. |

Thanks for your quick replay. This is the second time to write this as the site wouldn't let me send the first and I lost all content, so let's try again. Fan Speed--This system has six fan speeds. Like all fans, the faster they run, the louder they are. In order to cool, whether in Auto or Manual mode, the fans in this car must run at either the fifth or sixth speeds, in recirculate mode and are noisy. Cabin Filter--Thanks for alerting to the cabin filter. I didn't know this car had one. However, since this lack of performance has been since the car was new, it is not likely the root cause of the low performance. Freon Level--It is my belief that at the first service, the technician somehow made a mistake about the freon level in the system--maybe the device he was using to measure was out of calibration. It is unreasonable that the factory installed that much extra freon--very difficult without having extremely high internal pressures. Then, the technician made a second mistake by demonstrating to me that performance was above normal when he was measuring outside air temperature rather than the prescribed recirculating temperature as a reference, and closing all but one vent where the thermometer was--not the printed procedure. When the second technician performed service, he found too little freon in the system, I think, because the previous tech hadn't put in enough. By the way, between services, the AC performance did not deteriorate, which probably indicates there is no leak. In fact, the performance has been the same since the last re-charge. Thermometer in Vent--Since I first determined the system was not performing as well as I thought it would, I have had a thermometer in the center vent. At first, the temperature seldom got down to 60 degrees, especially on hot days. When the car was moving at lower than freeway speeds, in stop and go traffic, or while stopped, going below 70 was extremely rare. Now, it reaches 60, but not while moving slowly on a hot day. Unfortunately, we are not having hot weather right now, and testing the system is not possible. Thanks for your help. Regards, Jack |

Make: 2009 STI Mileage: 13k Time Out Of Use: None Problem And Likely Cause: Radio paint is fading, peeling, scratching off. My finger? Modifications: CB Exhaust Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes (told to hold until Feb to see Subaru rep) Reason Given For Denial: Subaru Rep needs to see it, come back when subaru rep is in town, until then, deal with it. Dealer wont replace without Subaru rep seeing it. Your Story: This is my 3rd in a row subaru (03WRX, 06STI, 09STI) and recently noticed a silver spot on my radio dash trim. As I looked closer, I noticed that it was a chip in the black paint and the silver paint below it was showing! Then I took a closer look at my radio and noticed that the paint is fading off around my volume knob too. And the black rubber like paint above the volume knob is peeling off too. Not sure what the chip in the trim is from. But the fade/scratches around the volume knob clearly seem to be from my fingers. It would make sense the scratches are from my finger nails I guess. I mean, only my fingers have touched them. And I dont have long finger nails. In fact, my nails dont pass my finger, as they are very short. The problem is... I hardly use the stereo volume knob at all. 99% of the time, I touch my steering wheel controls. And the paint/finish on those is mint? Plus non of my other subaru's had this problem and I had those for a much, much loger time. I showed this to my dealership months ago and they told me a subaru rep would have to come see it, because its a 2k stereo (yea right) and if they replace it, and Subaru denies it, then they loose money. I understand. But the subaru rep never came to the dealership and the dealership never called me to tell me when he was coming like they said they would. Last month I brought it to my dealerships attention again, asking them why they never called me like they said they would. They had no excuse other than sorry and took some photos to send to the rep. 2 weeks pass and I call to see if they got any word from the Subaru rep since they didnt call me back again and they said now subaru is changing all there sales reps and in the mean time, Im just going to have to wait until Feb for a rep to see it. ![]() To me, its clearly wear, but it shouldnt be happening to a 8month old car. Especially since the past two Subaru's Ive had never had this problem. And Like I said, I hardly even use the volume knob as I have grown to love the streering wheel controls. Here is what it looks like: ![]() What do you guys think? Anyone else have this issue? Just seems odd that the one year they start using this non industry standard sized raido that now I have paint coming off. Where as the past two Subaru's I had that were industry standard double din size, never showed a single scratch in the 3yrs I owned each one of those. Bummed out! ![]() Last edited by ILSMKU2; 12-21-2009 at 02:35 PM. |

![]() I am 95% sure they will deny it, they will say you scratched it with your keys, ring, lighter, coin, or something like that. Also, above the knob it also appears to be pryed, or just wear, I am not sure, but its a long shot IMO.
I have had 2 OEM head units replaced, for a different issue, but I saw the dealer invoice to subaru of canada, and they were each $1750, that freaking insane for the crappy sound they produce! Good Luck |

![]() Well, after waiting all this time. SOA finally approved my radio replacement.
So some new SOA rep calls me this morning. Prior to that I always spoke to some other lady. So the dude calls me and says, were going to replace your radio in good faith. But the dealer said you had an amp and that the scratch on your radio was probably from that! I just rolled my eyes while listening to him and thought, well its covered, why argue. But yea, my scratches were from use (maybe I turn my volume up and down to much?) and that SOA rep made it sound like it was ME who installed an AMP and somehow did that. Perhaps if I had one big gash across it or something sure. But Jesus! Look at my pic. Its from the FINGER MAN! THE FINGER! ![]() |

![]() I love reading these dialogs between SOA, the Dealers, and cutomers who have brand new cars or cars under "warranty".
Someone earlier was waiting on a Subaru Rep. Lol I think they have ONE and he vacations six months of the year. My dealer and SOA are a bunch of dodgy, lying SCUMBAGS. |

Make: Subaru Impreza (5 door) Mileage: 9500 Time Out Of Use: 1.5 weeks (and counting 6/4 drop off date) Problem And Likely Cause: Alarm locked out both fobs, no push button start, keyless entry, etc. If unlocked manually, alarm sounds, fob reset in owners manual does not work. Cause: Subaru says it is the 'computer that talks to all other computers" has shorted out. Say that adding a radar detector via fuse tap to auto dimming mirror and dashcam to 12v fuse (to toggle parking mode) and door locks (constant power) caused computer to short out. the door locks and the 12v plug still work in the car. Modifications: Radar detector (passport max) and dashcam (panorama X2) Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes Reason Given For Denial: TBA Your Story: So I bought the car Dec 2014, had the radar detector in my BRZ so I moved it over to the impreza. Beginning of the summer added the dashcam due to parking worries. Drove around for months without issue. then fob stopped working. checked fuses, all were good. alarm goes off and does not allow for a reset. had it towed to subaru, The rep states that "If the overall resistance in the cars electrical system changes it could short out the computer". They claim issue has been happening with folks with aftermarket tail lights or those of added LED lighting. They ordered a new computer (still have not told me exactly what its technical name is, I have asked for it). Awaiting its arrival, they said that Subaru may not honor the repair due to aftermarket stuff. |

What exactly is the car doing / not doing? It is very possible that hard wiring the radar detector and camera could have caused this issue, but I need more information |

I had the radar detector installed since Dec and the dashcam installed since March. The BIU is what went out on the car, totally fried no codes. Warranty claim denied due to dashcam. 902 dollar bill. Apparently the electrical system is just that delicate, going to hook dashcam up to the battery directly. Only 'safe' way have anything installed is to bypass the entire electrical system of the car (dealer technician recommendation, also hinted to return the car to stock before bringing it in). They said this has only become as issue in the newer vehicles due to a redesign of the electrical system. The said the radar detector didn't do anything because the rearview mirror is connected to the eyesight harness which has a breaker if it backfeeds/short circuits. TLDR: dont install aftermarket stuff into the electrical system of your 2015 impreza it may fry you BIU and you will get a nice fat bill. Last edited by trevor2.0; 06-19-2015 at 07:37 PM. Latch lacked contact with the base and the lid's spring was too stiff. Modifications: Accessport, mud flaps, and seasonal wheels/tires. Submitted For Warranty Work: Yes Reason Given For Denial: N/A Your Story: Owned the car for a little under two years and use the center console each time I drive. As winter set in, the center console lid wouldn't remain latched, and would pop open about half an inch. Dealer tried lubricating the lid's spring, but to no avail, and ordered a replacement on warranty. Took a second visit to get the new lid installed. Issue is resolved. Same look, no creaks or rattles, and has a satisfying feel. |

Make: 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0 Premium 5-Door Mileage: ~8.2k Time Out Of Use: 11 days and counting... Problem And Likely Cause: about 2 inches of water in my passenger compartment Modifications: None Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes Reason Given For Denial: I must have left both front windows open in a rain storm Your Story: 3 Weeks ago on a hot summer Sunday my brother and i were driving to my aunts pool from my house. Both he and I felt water drip on our feet when the car turned. I pulled over in the parking lot of a CVS and checked to see what was wrong. I figured since i was using the AC maybe there was some condensation dripping. I didn't see any active drips when the car was at rest and only a couple of drips on my weathertech floor mats. i figured no big deal. Fast forward to midweek still hot out, my wife and i commute to work together every day. I drive to my work with her in the passenger seat, i get out and go to work, she gets in the drivers seat and heads to her work. about 30 minutes to my work with an additional 20 to hers for both the morning and evening commutes. We both try and go to the gym before/at lunch/after work but it doesn't always happen. Since we do try and make the gym a habit we typically both have the following baggage with us each day: 1 backpack with laptop in it, 1 gym bag with change of clothes and shower stuff and one lunch bag. This particular morning i happen to enter my work parking lot driveway a little faster than usual and my wife's stuff falls on the the floor from the backseat. she complained i parked said sorry and was on my way to work. About 20 minutes later when my wife got to her work she texted saying her backpack was soaked. I said take pictures and ill call Subaru to make a service appointment. We get an appointment with the dealer we got it from for that Saturday. and in the interim we are freaking out about how much water is in the car and we didnt notice. I have videos where it sounds like i am driving a fish bowl. We take it to the dealer let them know the story, they give us a rental and tell us they will check it out. No call back on Saturday or Monday, i have to make the call to get an update. The update is...... They could not find any leaks in the car, therefore they have determined i left my windows down and that is whee the water came from. My wife and i do not leave our windows down. That is not the kind of people we are. We highway commute for most of the drive so its windows up AC cranking and podcast or music blasting. So they are not budging on diagnosis..... Any thoughts? |

Make: 2018 Subaru WRX Premium MT Mileage: 4100 Time Out Of Use: 1 day in shop; currently in possession Problem And Likely Cause: Bubble on dash; dash + dash frame replaced. Dash now buzzes like a swarm of bees when vehicle is not at operating temp. Modifications: None Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes Reason Given For Denial: Not denied Your Story: Well, I had one of those weird bubbles on the dash. Subaru was just going to replace the whole dash, but SOA had my local dealer also replace the dash frame as well. Took about 1 day to do all that. Since I got my car back, the whole dash buzzes like crazy. Most noticable over bumps, but any road imperfections will cause the dash to buzz or creak. When the car is cold, it will buzz and creak from the center and the LH side of the dash. It lessens as the car warms up but does not entirely go away. Before the dash was replaced, it was whisper quiet. No noises, creaks, buzzing. Quietest subaru wrx cabin I ever had. Did anyone else have this same issue? Were you able to get SOA to fully fix your dash and spend the time putting it together to remove the noises? I'm only being a little anal about this because the dash was rock solid before so I know it can be done. |
