any paint experts out there?
hey, gotta question,
Got a new STi and was wondering if forking out some extra cash for a few coats of clear coat is worth it??? Being my third new subaru ive bought i know the paint chips and scratches way too easy. Would paying a cheap paint shop be good to keep the fresh paint fresh for years to come? And would more clear coat make it alot harder to chip, and easier to buff out scratches? please and thanks for any advice

I am no expert but having your car painted at a "cheap" paint shop (aka Macco) will absolutely NOT be good for the paint. Your car will look worse when they are finished with it, I can promise you that.
Just keep up with regular wash and wax's and and that will keep the car looking good. If you do get a scratch that you can't get out, chances are you can take it to a body shop and they can wetsand it out for you. |

Do not have a cheap shop even put clear coat on. Clear coat may not by as finnicky to place as paint, however, it can certainly be screwed up very easily if ultimate care is not taken.
I'd imagine for a good shop to do what you would want done it would cost 60-70% of a full paint job as the only thing your cutting costs on is the pant itself and some areas of the car that won't need it. There is still a lot of disassembly and prep costs involved. This would cost 2k+ for anything that wouldn't ruin the finish of your car. And really there is no guarantee that after getting this your car won't look worse. Not to mention I'd be willing to bet it'd void your subaru paint/rust warrantee. Skip the idea and just pay a pro detailer 300 evert two years to make it look new again. |

Dont bother reclearing your car. Its brand new, just keep it waxed and clay barred and you'll be fine
Every timke you mess with the paint (even clear) it never really is as strong as the factory. |

Hey guys thanks for the advice, some reason i thought this would be a good idea....
Also thought i read in me manual that there was no need for waxes and i was nervious about scraping a clay bar along my car, but probably cause ive never done it. Anyways thanks for steering me clear of the clearcoat idea, any good how to's sites or threads u would recomend? |

The clay bar full three step procedure is well worth the time and effort

Well, you will make the paint thicker. This can cause more and easier chipping.
Also, with a "cheap/cheaply done" clear coat it can peal leaving your paint in a bigger issue. My father had his truck clear coated a few weeks after he bought it and it began to to turn white and peel, making it look like if it was 10+ yrs old with bad wax jobs over the years. Leave a good distance between the car in front of you and do a good clay/wax job. |
