Still using vishnu unichips?
I've gotten my hands on a cheap, though outdated, vishnu stage 0 unichp w/ emi adapter. I've got a catless uppipe, as the original kit prescribes, but no plugs or underdrive pulleys.
My plan is to hook up the electronics, slap on an mbc, and set it conservatively, but I have one question: Is it safe? (marathon man..) If anyone is still running the setup I've described (or is remotely interested in this post), I'd like to hear your input. As i understand it, the original stage 0, as seen in SCC, ran an mbc but had no emi adapter and didn't completely deal with the ptfb problem. The addition of the EMIA was supposed to cure this problem (with or without the unichip) though the search for proof of this has yielded little.. Another question: What do you think would happen w/o the mbc? smaller gains? anything safer/appreciable?

Ive had the same setup that you had plus a perrin crank pulley minus the mbc. Ive had not real bad issues with this setup. I did get the misfire issue with all four cylinders but i know that it is just a miscommunitcation with piggy and ecu. I though the car ran so much stronger than stock through the midrange! Im sure you will be pleased. Do you have a boost and egt guage? I have a boost and will be adding a egt soon. If you have an egt can you pm me the temps you are getting with the mbc?
Good luck on the install, pm me if you have any trouble... Johnny |

I do have a boost guage (critical!), though I don't have an EGT sensor.
WRXer, could you describe the misfire problem you experienced? How did you diagnose it? |

you can always pick up the plugs seperately if you prefer copper, get bkr7e's from ngk. great plugs. if you prefer platinum, get whatever it is in the 7 heat range. make sure you gap them to 0.028" and you're good.

Well i got a blinking cel at high rpm's. As soon as i let off the gas the blinking stops and either goes away or goes solid. When i goes solid i get the code read and cleared to see what it is. I dont feel any difference in the car when the cel is on or blinking, just the standard misfire that has been plaguing the unichip since it was produced. Part of the reason why other ems' were created.
If you do a search about it you will see from a post by shiv about the reason. Has to do with the replication of the crank angle sensor. |

I've got the unichip/emia combo with mbc in a stage 1 type setup for the same reason you got yours. It's nice except if I hold about 3 psi of boost it's jerky (as the emi kicks on/off), so I drive around that. At WOT, it's great. I just ran a 13.5 @ 101 in the 1/4. The EGTs are always safe. I only have the gauge for an extra measure of safety.

Thanks for the input boys. I can't wait to start hacking those wires. I've been trying for that 100mph mark in the quarter for a year now.
Hey WRXer, where did you get those codes read and cleared? |

OBDII scanner
another fellow wrxer that is a professor at my school. He has a nice Snap On OBDII scanner. You can buy a generic scanner at any auto parts store, they run upwards of 100 bucks though. The wiring process is pretty easy, good luck! Some auto parts places, like autozone i think, scan for free ask around.

I just installed a Vishnu Stage 1 unichip with EMI, PnP harness, and a dawes MBC a few days ago. Mod other than that is basically a catless uppipe. I know its set for a turbo back exhaust but that's due to arrive on wed so no worries.
One thing I want to note...its pretty annoying running the MBC for daily driving. Being father to a one year old, I've been pretty mild with my driving and PTFB is really getting to me. I find myself watching my boost gauge more than simply enjoying my car. So as a compromise I run w/o the MBC for daily driving and when I'm out to play...I quickly slap on the MBC. Its a mere 3 minute install. I've gotten quite a few CEL's since I installed the unichip. I hear its quite normal for a unichip so I'm not worried. All in all...its not too shabby. I'll eventually upgrade to a better engine management but for the price I paid for this...its good to tide me over for a while. BTW...I'm hitting 17psi without a MBC. Normal? |

Mfactor, I know how you feel w/ the ptfb thing. To combat the problem i installed a switch to toggle an mbc on and off. It's a grainger solenoid that when turned on shuts off the fbc and connects the wastegate to a txs mbc using the bov line as the pressure signal. "Bristol boost" came up with it a couple years back, and I emulated the design he posted. I've had it for a full year now and it works like charm. Everyone always asks what the toggle switch is for. I tell them, "oil slicks."

I set the mbc for 15 psi tops, and it's good for a 13.7 et. Don't know if 17 is safe or not with modified EM. The answer, i suspect, varies with who you talk to. Vishnu recommends 15, to my knowledge.

Yea ive been hitting pretty high boost levels using the FBC. Sometimes i hit boosts as high as 18psi....That is why i have asked about the egt guage. im wondering if im still in a safe temp range. Well once i put one on ill tell you what s up...

I was on the freeway and let the RPMS climb up from 3k at 4th gear...my boost spiked at 20psi with no MBC!

whoa! 20 psi w/ no mbc? sounds strange. The vishnu unichip doesn't mess with the fbc solenoid, right? Turboxs' unichip did, but the vishnu left it alone and used their mbc for boost control (from what i understand, I'm still classified as a newbie).
Weird. |

I know it sounds strange. It wasn't anything intermittent either...I can keep replicating it. Might not be abnormal at full throttle climbing from 3k rpms though...I don't know. |

Might be boost creep, are you catless with a 3 inch exhuast?

Did the install tonight. Troubles were had.
CEL came on immediately, though the car started up (seemingly)as it would normally. (Blinking red light came on) I took it for a drive and with stock boost control it seemed as though the car went into open loop way too easy, though i may have been imagining that. Idle was high, even after 20 minutes it stayed at 1000 rpms (as opposed to the usual 500 ish). Most disconcerting was what happened when i tried full boost at WOT. In second gear, as the boost neared 15 psi, acceleration stops and I hear "click click click." My evening was made. Did a quick check on the wiring, and everything seems to be in place. Going to check the wiring in closer detail as soon as i get some sleep. More to come. You guys used the wire diagrams from the vishnutuning.com downloads section right? |

Yep i used the unichip and the emi diagram together. I first wired the emi using the emi diagram (has some wires from the unichip on there also) then with the remaining wires from the unichip i looked on the unichip diagram and connected all the leftover wires that were on that diagram....I remeber that i didnt use all the wires from the unchip. If i can remember correctly i think the purple and brown wire do not get used.
That sucks about the clicking sound that came up with your WOT pull. Ive never had that problem.....I did get the blinking cel on my first run with it all hooked up but i knew that it was just bad cas replication. Maybe your car just needs to learn and adjust to the new settings.....good luck |

Got the CEL checked out (thanks to autozone for loaning an OBD to me) and it turns out I had a low MAF signal. Loose wire, i'm guessing, but how on earth did the car run w/ no maf signal?

i think that the car just went into safe mode or something like that. I once started the car with one of the plugs on the ecu harness unplugged. Cel right away and very high idle rpm... i obviuosly plugged that sucker back in reset the ecu and everything was alright.
Im sure you'lll find that loose wire, hopefully your harness isnt too much of a rats nest! |
