As a proud owner of the original pretender (98 2.5rs) let me just advise you to not spend a penny on small "bolt-on" upgrades (horrible horsepower to cost ratios) and instead plan to purchase a turbo-swap, turbo kit (meh), or a wrx =p.

I'm glad to hear form someone on their experience with bolt-ons for these cars. Lookin for some info. Does anyone know the engine model that came in this car...or where I look to get the code? Anyone know if this engine even has a high enough compression ratio to add a turbo?

i would think it is the EJ251. be careful though!!! http://www.rallitek.com/avoturbokit1.html. if this is your motor you must know about what the engine can take. i wouldn't exceed 6 lbs PSI personally. it will be a gain of 100 hp at the crank. I understand what you guys mean. But everyone here is talking about bolt-on turbo. Has anyone tried a supercharger and a EJ25 or a 22? And what kind of results it would be? Also, would it unbalance the vehicle depending on the location of the supercharger?

Depending on the year and model of your car. The engine varies.

I hear you bud. I have an earlier legacy/outback and I've come to terms that in the engine rebuild coming up (hopefully summer), performance go fast bits are required! Plus hopefully preparing the block for turbo.

Talk to me about what performance parts you're looking for?
Bolt on? A little bit of work?

How annoying/loud do you like to be?
Where you live, how strict are the emissions/testing?

I will probably have a couple suggestions, depending what you are comfortable with.

I have a 96 subaru legacy outback with ej22. I would love to rebuild the engine, upgrading to a semi closed or closed deck (more metal to contain more pressure from a higher compression ratio) that I will get from a turbo.
I love the ej22 engine, the 96 at least, and a little earlier. It was designed to be a non interference motor, which is great for reliability.
Downside? Overweight and underpowered. I need alot more power, bigger tires and alot of torque to navigate sand.
I've got lots of plans, the restrictions are time and money. Tell me about your plans.

So recently I blew my ej253 from a 2006 2.5i RS and just bought a 1996 dohc legacy to make the engine swap. I know itt sounds crazy, I've done the research and I'm willing to experiment. The only thing I have a doubt on is if it's a good idea on using the ej253 intake manifold on the ej25d block or just using the full ej25d swap?

P.S. I'm gonna turbo it
