Houston travel question

Quick Q: we're traveling to TX for winter holiday break and our first stop we'll be in Houston for a few nights. But I don't know the greater Houston metro area at all and trying to find a general neighborhood/district for booking a hotel that is a nice balance between being in a nicer, safe area, can walk around, easy access from airport followed by getting the hell out of traffic as we hit the freeway drive to our next stop in San Antonio. I understand Houston traffic is as legendary bad as LA on a given weekday. Planning to take the kids to Johnson Space center, hit up the Vietnamese food scene in the area and maybe do some upscale shopping, that's about it for Houston.

Ideas or suggestions of general areas to stay is helpful.

first, don't expect too much from this forum as far as help. at least not timely help.

did you get to check out the JSC? there's actually plenty of Vietnamese food everywhere in Houston, even near JSC. the best Vietnamese in Houston is called Huynh's Restaurant. get a number 70.

not sure where you'll find upscale shopping in Houston, there's the Galleria, or Memorial city mall, both are typical mall experiences. holiday shopping in and around malls is a bad idea. we have a lot of really great museums, if you're down for that type of experience, and I'd say they're better than shopping, cheaper too.
