I'd say this seems to be the case - the early test on Top Gear did indicate that they used a digital display for the tach because an analog needle would not have shown the RPMs as accurately.

Who knows whether that's precision or just hype :P

The sound makes it worth every penny, IMO.
What's the difference between the first and second acceleration vids? My guess was that the first was in MPH and the other was in KPH, but they both indicate "km/h" on the dial?

Just a marketing error maybe.

Actually they said they used digital because the analog tach couldn't keep up with the engine free-revving. Slightly ore specific than just being inaccurate.

I remember that too... but it's just weird that the digital needle is so shaky.

It is by far the cheapest monocoque ever produced.
It's also the slowest and looks like a bad body kit on the new toyo/suba coupe. AFAIK it's also the first mono with the engine in front of the passenger compartment. Which is a great idea, but it has nothing unique about it. No 'essence' like a Ferrari, 'outlandish, yet stylish' like a Lamborghini, 'outrageous speed/dollar' like ZR1, 'raw' like Viper/ACR.

It's the slowest of the bunch I named, slowest hyper-car, slower around a certain ring than two American sports cars, and has a lower top speed than a base, $85k, convertible Viper.

Not to mention that Japan's Supercars that have been imported to the US (2000GT, NSX, & R35) have all had great performance for a very competitive value and something unique about the car that makes it more wanted than their competitors.

Monocoque doesn't impress when there are unibodies on its tail, and it's behind tube chassis. It is safer though. . .

About the only thing I would diagree with. First off, that's just a, umm, -fluff- statement to make.

Moreover, everyone that drives this thing says it is spine tingling and just awesome.

I for one am all about Toyota developing some 'essence', and it has to start somewhere.

Well Ferrari started with participation & success in motorsports.
Putting the LFA back in the 24 hours of Nurburgring this year is a good start.

A good start?

Yeah, let's just ignore the countless wins in Cart, IRL, rally, IMSA (Daytona 24 Hours and the 12 Hours of Sebring), the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the Baja 500 and the Baja 1000, in addition to Manufacturer's and Driver's Championships in the IRL, NASCAR, Grand Am, CART, IMSA, SCORE, MTEG and CORR.

I supposed the 7 years in F1 (although not as successful) counts for nothing as well?

***While Ferrari has a longer, more successful F1 history, as well as participation in a few other series, Toyota CERTAINLY has a more diverse motorsports background, with much success as well.

And I didn't even have to mention the pro-celeb race!

Admittedly I don't follow the aforementioned pro-celeb race, but how often do they do it? I remember back in the day reading an article in Road & Track about it how they used Celica GT-Ss... and also how Ashley Judd was one of the participants.

My thinking is, if they want to bank on the Toyota history then they should've badged the car as a Toyota. They call it Lexus to distinguish it from Toyota, so that's how it should be judged.

True they did run Grandam though.

I agree that if you cannot tout somewhat recent racing success, then you do not have a heritage to pull upon. You are sort of living on past glory. Which is thin. If the tech from this car trickles down then that alone makes it worth it to me. I do not care if it is a tenth slower than XYorZ car. Once you get this fast, it is all pointless. They are all F-ing quick. It comes down to driving experience, reliability, fun factor. Faster and flashier cars than the miata have come out, but the miata still stands above them all as its just a blast to drive. This car may not be as fast, but if it is truly an amazing driving experience top to bottom, and well engineered to boot, then it is worth its metal, err.. plastic.. no, um carbon.

The shouting and booing over this car is already too much to handle, and that's with the saucy Lexus badge. Can't imagine what it would be like as a Toyota.

Come to think of it...

Does any manufacturer who makes a car as frugal/cheap as a Corolla or Echo, etc. also make anything as advanced as this?

That's a span of automobiles I'm not sure anyone can match.

I guess VW/Bugatti...kind of.
