So I got my VAG-COM cable in today (409.1) and the circuit board appears to be different from either of the two variations previously discovered, HOWEVER it seems to be the same circuit with a different layout on the board and perhaps an extra component.
I was wondering if anyone here like MadJax had any idea how I should MADmod this cable. My K and L lines are not quite so clear-cut so I'm not sure where to proceed. Although the pin layout for the OBDII interface still appears to make sense and I think I have the exact same op-components as well. Below are four pics of the chip so you can get a sense of what I'm talking about. ANY help is greatly appreciated. Pics: Front Back |

To aid anyone in their travels this is what I have found. Using the board displayed in madjax's tutorial with mad mod, test connectors and your flash block jumped you can flash to your ECU using this cable. You need ECU flash 1.32, the drivers for the cable, and your port speed set to 4800 bps. I've seen many people get it to work with bugeyes and other model WRX/STis after the mad mod. I myself tried the mad mod and broke a pin off of the IC chip
I'm ordering another cable to try again on my 02 bugeye. I'll be sure to keep up and let everyone know how it goes so this mystery can be solved. |

I own a 2002 WRX and a BFM cable. Although I can log with romraider and use learning view, I cannot read my ROM using ecuflash.
For those with 02-03 imprezas, how are you getting this to work? What version of Ecuflash? Special drivers? What operating system are you using? |

Sorry for blabbiling, but I can't find a dedicated madmod thread, only this:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...php?p=36951245 It does not list what Ecuflash drivers to use, or anything about setting serial speeds. Can anybody link me to a thread with more information? |

I can't tell you which Chinese cable will best work with this hack but here's something I posted in another thread that is relevant to using EcuFlash with unsupported hardware. The question in the other thread was specific to OS support in EcuFlash, but the general idea is the same. Something to consider in the event you might ask yourself why should you consider purchasing an actual OpenPort from Tactrix.
-Mike "Why do we do we spend timing working on OS issues? We spend time on OS issues (upcoming release has improved install for Windows Vista), new features, and new vehicle support (two addition ECUs in the works now), because supporting and creating a better product for the community is the focus of our company. Our daily work is funded by the sales of the OpenPort. We're also getting ready to hire another customer support person and eventually we'd like to add a third full time developer. You should consider purchasing an OpenPort because it's assembled in both Washington and California, not overseas, so sales supports physical labor in two US states and two companies. Your purchase supports EcuFlash development. You receive lifetime support with our hardware & software, even if you aren't the original owner. You support the growing of a small business that works to make tools of value to this community. We think those facts make us pretty unique in this space and good reasons to consider purchasing our hardware to support US production and development of an affordable product." |

Just so you know. I was succesful and have reflashed over 80 times. Just out of curiousity is this capable of reflashing 32bit stuff or just 16bit?

Bump up from the dead. My BFM cable will read, log and test write, but won't write to the ECU despite my green diagnostic plugs connected and flash block jumpered. Dreaded programming voltage too low (3.40v). My cable is like the one on the right in post #216. It's got the 6.000mHz crystal onboard. Is there a mod I can do to be able to use this cable for flashing? This is my first foray into ECUFLASH and romraider. My other project is using standalone.

I'm not familiar with the term bfm, but I have an alphabid cable for my 2005 Sti. I can do everything I need to with it. Read, write, etc without any issues. My understanding is that canbus vehicles are different though. I think that is 06+ Wrx/sti

Some sort of update here. I have the BFM cable with the board on the RIGHT in this picture:
After contacting Madjax about a madmod for this circuit and a couple emails with specifics, I wasn't really any closer to a solution.....or so I thought. I tied together OBDII plug pin #'s 9&15 and 11&16 and tried a flash cycle. Suprisingly, it worked! The map I flashed didn't run good, so I flashed it back to what it was before and had success. I don't know if it is necessary to desolder and lift legs on component U2 and add some jumpers to U1 (of the circuit shown on the LEFT in the above pic) but from what I can see, simply applying +12vdc to the L and K pins on the OBD plug allows me to use this BFM cable. YMMV, Jay |

Hi Storm,
So you've only done the 2nd part of the mod and it works ? Pins 11 - 16 are for +12v Pins 15 - 9 are for L line Never apply 12v on L or K line !!! |

Yeah, I ran one jumper from 9 to 15 and a separate jumper from 11 to 16. Since my board is different from the instructions, I figured I would see what happens by providing +12vdc to where it needed to be (based on previous pictures and explanations in this thread). I successfully test wrote and then flashed a ROM to my ECU (twice). If there is a way to mod this other circuit in the same manner as those shown above, I'll try that too!
My next step is to go through and build a ROM with input from someone smarter than me, in hopes that it'll run better. I'm only looking to boost my milage at this point. Quote:
Thanks for all the help and work to make these off brand cables useful!!! Jay |

Hi there, I just signed up to post this, I'm in the UK, and I've been trying to get my cable to read the ECU in my 2003 blobeye WRX. I have the same cable as you have modified, I'd just like to ask which version of ecuedit you used? as I'm still having no luck. |

VAG COM CABLE KKL with FT232RL chip is working one for logging, reading and flashing.
I'm responsible for that, because right now I have 2 same cables in front of me. bot are vag com cables with blue box and silver wiring. -one only is good for logging my 02 jdm wrx -another one is good for logging, reading the roms and flashin as well (even for my 02 jdm wrx. do not know anything about newer ECU-s and flashing options). the difference between them is in the chip's marking (lettering)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one of them which can flash 02wrx ecu does have written: FTDI 1417-C GP070081 FT232RL on the little chip it has a letters: 3AA29KK04 LM339 another one, which I can't make to read or flash ECU does not have any letters on the big chip, it's a noname chip!!!!! on the little one it has the letters: 28ANSOM LM339 G4 so the only problem is to find proper cable with blue box and silver wire, which does have chips with mentioned letters: FTDI 1417-C GP070081 FT232RL on the little chip it has a letters: 3AA29KK04 LM339 |
