windows 7 64bit, could read but never got it to write, even after jumping pins 11 and 16, voltage errors. Gave up, spent the money on a legit cable.

The BFM cable is exactly the same as the VAG-COM KKL USB cables that go for under $10 shipped on eBay. Try this eBay search. Just sayin'...

This means they'll only reflash/read the ECU image on 32-bit non-CANbus Subarus. So early WRX is out of luck. They will log on any modern Subaru, including 16-bit, and including CANbus.

This info is nothing new. Obviously BFM has just been buying the same cable and charging 5x as much as the Ebay vendors.

FWIW try out a vagcom cable, 9 out of 10 times you will get voltage errors and trouble communicating with ECUFlash. Some will log however but glitchy under a higher list of parameters , and some will have a hit or miss on the voltage error. Comes down to pin placement, and connection points on the boards to set things apart and make them work. BFM cables have worked with 2002/03 WRX ECU's not just USDM but JDM and other Europe models. But the timing issue which did not seem hardware related, is was forced them to pull support.

I'am in no part representing them, just stating some additional information for the masses.

Anybody know if the BFM or vag-com cables work for a 2011 wrx? Don't think this matters, but I have windows 7 64 bit.

Nope, won't work on your 2011 WRX. Anything past 07 runs a CANBUS ECU, and the BFM cable doesn't support those ECU's. They don't really work with any of the WRX ECU's, but that's purely subjective.

Thanks for that, any idea what cable(s) might work for me?

I figured that would be the case. Oh well, still cheaper than an accessport.

Fwiw... the evo scan 1.3 cable works flawlessly with 01 02 and 03. Just ecu flash 1.29 and get the latest definitions and your good to go. No errors whatsoever. Bfm doesn't work with bugeyes I have one of those also. Good for logging but that's it.

run a power line from your battery to your flash block. if your looking at it with the clip facing upwards, its the top right connector.

Does it raise the voltage at all? In the log error message area. It has to be around 11-12 volts. Turn on your lights and AC if it goes over.

It should be the top right btw

Just a little FYI shipping from BFM is PAINFULLY slow. I bought mine on the 21st and I still haven't seen it, and I am in the same state as them.

I bought the same VAG-COM cable on ebay and had it in 2 days. Just find a US shipper on ebay and return the BFM one. It's the same exact thing.

Im pretty much commited to the BFM cable right now. It just sucks to deal with a vendor that works at their own pace. I ordered a tial bov 3 days after I ordered the cable and it's already installed on my car, and that came from IL.

My main problem is that they use First class mail which doesn't give you a real tracking number, it only states that the USPS may have your package, it doesn't even tell me it has left BFM yet.

Hi,

With the BFM cable on my car I could only datalog with Ecuexplorer and Learning View.

After some research using the datasheets of FT232RL, the LM339 and patterns of a VAG cable, I was able to make this cable to flash & read on WRX02 and Forester 2.0 XT EDM 02 (same engine as 2002 WRX ... but with TD035) with ecuflash, after some modifications.

Some people say that BFM and VAG cable are the same, so ...

You need to:

hardware
* Separate the L line from the line K
* Attach the pin 15 to pin 9 on the OBD port
* Send 12V regulated on the plug 11 on the OBD port

* (connect green plugs each other, jump the white plug)

Software:
* The firmware of the cable does not need to be changed (TRX and DTR are not inverted)
* Install Ecuflash 1.32 with the tactrix drivers included.
* Set COM port to 4800 bps

*I run it on Seven 64.

Tools:

How to:

The K and L line:

- Picture of the module before modification: red lines = front , blue lines = back side

- Picture of the module with modification to do: light blue lines = wire to cut, fuchsia lines = new wire to solder

Cutting the down line is easy: a little help with a Dremel

For the top one, I unsoldered leg of the IC and I left in the air. You must be very careful because it is very fragile.
I connected the legs with wire fairly fine (0.006 inch)

Finished, it look like that:

For the +12v regulated on the plug 11 on OBD port
Take the ground on the pin 4 or 5
take the 12v on pin 16
get a low drop regulator type LM2940 (ebay)
welding the LM2940 output on pin 11.

Rear view pinout of cable OBD :

Tada:

if you want to thank me : tune my map :-) http://www.mediafire.com/?hkh09sgv9obz0ug

Ecuflash 1.32 : http://www.mediafire.com/?266b5ht6xzgumfb

EDIT 2012/04/22
You can do it without the 12v regulator

if you need any more information , ask me .

Have Fun

Excellent work. I posted several times about the K and L line issues, and how BFM and Vag did not work and never would.

Thought about doing what you accomplished, but got cold feet looking at the tiny leads and my crappy eyesight. Maybe if I had a microscope to work under and inspect things. Luckily I found a Tactrix 1.3 cable cheap and forgot about the modifications...........
