I think under 50cc your O.K. as long as ur over 16. Plus no highways etc. No sidewalks and you must let cars pass you if your on the road...I'm gona search for the exact law.

There is a shop on Main Street in Paterson about a block up from Broadway. I've seen them out front, but didn't see the prices.

Not sure if they are all street legal. But if they are, they will be classed like mopeds and you would need a drivers license to operate one legally, it would presumably have to be registered and insured. At least that's how it is in NY.
Off-road on private property, that's another matter.

the pep boy bike are 49cc and aren't that bad for the money, their only $399.00 and look like a little pocket rocket. the real deal ones go for $900 + . If you buy the pep boy one you can alway go to a mountain bike shop and upgrade all the parts pretty easy.

In New York the minimotorbikes have provoked warnings from police and concern among drivers and residents. The city recentlyproposed legislation that would ban their sale and use. Sellers who violate the ban would pay a $1,000 fine. Riders would pay $500 and see their toys impounded.

The bill is moving full speed ahead, says councilman John Liu, chair of the transportation committee. "Their proliferation is something that's dramatic, something that presents a devastating public danger," he says.
Interesting thing about NY's proposed legis is that they're trying to ban the SALE of these things!

There are a TON of articles about cities and states passing similar legislation... type in "pocket bike ban"

edit: wait, did I just paste a link from the Christian Science Monitor?

yep i just talked to trenton about nj.

she said they have a memo. NY NJ and PA they are illegal on roads...only ok on private property.

unless they have pedals and signals, which would classify it as a moped were assed out.

funny that this thread came up, I was just thinking about posting about this same topic the other day... well I was doing some research on these bikes and I just won an auction on ebay for a 47cc bike on Sunday and with shipping it only came to $215 which is a steal .. at least I think.. lazy people not paying attention to ebay on a Sunday I guess and I got lucky.. I should be getting my pocket bike on Friday so I have a new toy to play with this weekend..

I did some research and found out that the true original pocket bike that is the newest racing craze in Italy are the 47cc - 1 foot 4 inch tall bikes and not the bigger 49cc bikes... the 47cc bike is actually faster than the 49, because the 49 is much bigger and weighs a lot more since most of them have headlights and tail lights and stuff ... the 47cc bikes weigh about 40 pounds while the 49cc bikes weigh as much as 80 pounds

Here's a link to the guy who's auction I won... he sells a ton of these bikes and has plenty of positive feedback... I think ebay is definetly your best and cheapest option for a pocketbike...

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dl...&userid=yomers

After I get mine and play with it this weekend i'll let you know my reviews... anyone else that has one, lemme know if u wanna have a pocket bike meet and some pocket bike races!

I'm stoked that this thread came up. i want to buy one as a joke. My buddy just bought his first REAL motorcycle, so I want to show up at his house on one of these pocket bikes. then, of course, i want to do the whole bit from dumb and dumber "I get 60 miles to the gallon on this hog. [adjusts mirror]"
