Can we talk about TVs too? Do I have to buy a $1000+ 4K TV or will the $400 Samsung do the same thing--I mean, 4K is 4K right?

On a dark scene in a movie, with a section of the screen with white in it, I would see these columns of white vertically on screen. It's based on how the LED's light the screen. Local Dimming I believe is what it's called. The cheaper LED's have this pretty badly and you can't really do anything about it. If you don't notice or care, go for it. I ended up getting the best non OLED screen I could afford. It still happens, but it's far less noticeable. I predict OLED screens will start coming down in price in the next year or 2. Example of the Local Dimming: |

I kind of think HDR is more impressive than the resolution.
"Tales by Light" on Netflix it pretty cool. www.rtings.com has some really good info. It has the "best of" in different budgets. I picked up a Samsung KS8000 55" last winter and love it. Both the picture and form factor are great. Around the edges it's less than an inch thick. |

After much researching I went with the Vizio P-series 55". Some reviews don't like the tablet remote; however I really enjoy it. For around 1k you cant go wrong. Picture is fantastic - zero complains for the price. IMHO Its actually better in many situations than the Panasonic OLED my father got at around the same time. The only drawback is that the tablet is chromecast based, so you can't cast AmazonPrime (as of now) via the tablet. For me, this isn't a problem since I can use firestick or PSPro, but for those without any additional devices it would be an issue

In really bright daylight is the ONLY situation that I can imagine where it may have the slightest edge. I have a local dimming Vizio set (M-series 75") and a 65" LG OLED, and it's not even close. |

Outstanding picture quality aside, I would not recommend an OLED display to everyone. If you are a heavy gamer, or watch a lot of content with tickers or persistent static displays (cable news/sports channels), I'd actually advisethat you don't get an OLED. Burn in is a real issue. Likewise, if you are used to running your LED display in torch mode, the OLED would be a poor choice for you. Honestly, though, if you are coming from a plasma display, and are used to the precautions you would take with that type of display (proper calibration, varied content, etc.) you'd probably be alright.

So here's a question for you OLED guys - when I'm over at the folks place with the OLED, some of the content appears to be grainy. I can watch the same exact content on my non- OLED 4K and it's crystal clear. Any settings I need to go over there and change? I'm pretty sure he's running one of the out of the box variants, but I wouldn't think that those should perform like dog****

I'm surprised at how inexpensive 4K TVs are now and was not expecting to find good OLEDs under $2000.
Hoping to be able to watch 4 football games on one screen in the near future. |
