calling all legacys........
....HELP!? does any legacy lover (owner) know how complicated it would be to swap out a jdm engine? would it mount directly to the tranny?
etc....... . also does anybody know where to get prices and such info. on this stuff. I'm cotemplating a swap, an over haul or any suggestions. my current engine is about to die. the #4 cyl only has 30 psi of compression but it doesn't smoke. it makes a weird ticking sound from thatside of the engine like air is passing through. i've heard it could be a timing belt but wouldn't that affect the #1 cyl. ? any suggestions. i took it to the dealership and paid $70 to find out the cyl was misfiring. i told the guy it doesn't take a genius to figur that out. Because i had the k&n crank case breathers on he said that could have been the problem. went home hooked the hoses back up off of the intake pipe back up still, the same. I NEED HELP LEGACYS!?!? thnx, gh.

I don't have an answer for you, but it would be neat if you threw a wrx engine in there and then took us for a ride...

sub soob - putting in a JDM long block is a PITA, since the wiring is all different. The simplest way of making more power is swapping in a EJ25 phase 2 shortblock from '99-up RS. If you plan on going turbo, get a EJ22T short block. You'll loose low end torque, but you'll have wicked power up top.

Apexboy - not too sure, but the short block shouldn't be too expensive... probably new around $2K or so?

Do you want to go turbo in the future? If so absolutely go with the American EJ22 turbo engine. You could complement the EJ22 block by putting your current hi-er flow DOHC EJ25 Heads. That would be yorur most cost effective move if your planning to go turbo. You can order a full Short Block brand new from www.subaruparts.com.
If you want to stay NA either go to someone who can better diagnose your problems or order a new Phase II EJ25 Shortblock. I'm telling you though your best bet is to order an EJ22 turbo shortblock then slap your current engines heads and order a TEC-II. Install all of this as an NA setup at first and learn how to tune the TEC-II. Then order the turbo setup of your choice and fine tune every aspect of engine management the TEC-II will allow. I promise, you will have one of the baddist 300hp Legacys around. Let me know what you end up doing. Brad |

heads might not be good
If you're only getting 30psi of pressure in that cylinder but not smoking any, I'd say you've got a burn valve or just a very worn valve.A bad ring will cause oil to get in the combustion chamber and burn, causing the smoke. A burnt valve can cause smoking, but on a flat engine config., there is less chance of oil leakdown from the heads into the combustion chamber. If thats the case, the heads will have to be worked before putting them on any block you might go to. Just something to think about. It might be cheaper to get a rebuilt set than to have those heads reworked.
OT. This is my fist Subaru, anybody know if the valves are adjustable? I need to get my 90,000 mile checkup done, so I may have them do it while its in there, just wanted to check that they are adjustable. |

Nippon Motors
There was a thread a while back with someone wanting to swap engines, cant recall when or why, but someone else mentioned Nippon Motors ([url=http://www.nippon-motors.com/]). I bookmarked their site, just incase.... I don't know how reliable they are or what their customer service is like. I do think that the motors are used though.
Anyways, just my $.02 |

I agree with BLZ
Ticking and no smoke, sounds like a valve problem and as he said head work will be necessary. This would also make the short block worthless to you. I think I would try further diagnosis as well.
If all you need is head work, thats not that bad. Minimally just pull the head have it gone through and pop it back on. Or you might consider pulling them both since the car will be down and have some performance work done to both heads as well as the one being repaired. ie three angle valve job, etc. Or pull and send them in as core to Cobb or Paeco and get some serious performance heads with new cams- SWEET!!!!! Any of these are easier and cheaper than a full engine swap and you might gain a few hp along the way. |

Dale Teague @ Teague's Auto in North Carolina might have a 2.5 out of a wrecked subie. He usually has some spare engines and stuff lying around.

1-(800) 326-6401 they sell powerful replacement engines for subaru--options of like 190HP, 240HP, 280HP and 340HP. They have an excellent reputation, from what I have read. Cost varies. |

Sub Soob,
Make an appointment with a mechanic you trust and have them perform a "leak-down" test. This should tell you exactly what and where your loosing your compression. I will agree with the others when they say it could be a bad valve. S. |
