Cool thanks. What about the grey wire that was screwed onto the side of the oem head unit? Does that go somewhere?

Oh, and my LAST question: the pioneer harness has a yellow wire with a black stripe that is labeled mute. Was I supposed to connect that to anything?

Thanks

Initial Review:

Initial impressions are that the stereo plays both louder and cleaner. Much easier to listen to music on the highway with the windows down than on the stock head unit.

The more advanced EQ over the stock head unit is a welcomed addition. The stock unit with the underseat subwoofer had WAY too much bass. I had to turn it down to -5 bass on the OEM unit. Now, it's a much more neutral sound at 0's across the pioneer EQ. I also thought the OEM unit was very harsh sounding in the mids and highs. The pioneer is much better in that respect as well.

HD radio, to my ears, is WAY better than the OEM non-HD radio.

I have had an issue with plugging my iphone 4S in through the fancy cable. When I got back in the car this morning, the head unit seemed to think the audio was playing through Pandora (I can see time elapse), but there is no audio. If I switch to BT streaming, the audio plays fine? I'm not sure what's going on there?

I tried to play a video podcast from my phone, and the image from the video appeared on screen, but it was paused. I couldn't figure out how to make the podcast play? This is not important, but I just wanted to see it work.

Overall, I think I'm going to enjoy this sucker. The only slight knock on this unit is the low resolution screen. It's perfectly fine for displaying song information etc. in a car, but it just seems that in 2012 the bar for a 7" screen would have been set a little bit higher... I knew this going into it. I picked this unit over the Kenwood 719 (4x more res) because I wanted the HD radio.

See this thread:

2011 WRX: Picture-back of NON-NAV radio

I identify the various sockets in post #3 there.

Also, there was a grey wire screwed on to the side of the stock head unit. Is this a ground? Does it need to be attached to the new harnesses ground wire?
That is an extra ground lead from the OEM subwoofer's T-harness. The harness taps into the ground lead from the 20-pin radio harness, but they also attach that ring terminal to one of the mounting screws on the side of the radio. I recommend you still do that with your aftermarket HU.

The Pioneer's yellow/black mute wire is for older-style phone car kits (to mute the HU when you answer or place a call). As slowhat said, no need to use it -- make sure it's well insulated.

you can always add your own wires to a harness and an ASWC can be had from Amazon.

hack your own? Nissan harness can be had for about five or six bucks shipped from fleaBay. Buy a couple and move the wires (but colour code won't be right.)

I have started to solder my harnesses and ASWC together but I have not taken anything apart in my car yet.

So does anyone know how the OEM Kicker Sub in the trunk/hatch for the newer model year cars will work with a different headunit? (I have an AVH3400)

Just wondering if it will be easy and straightforward or if I need to cut into some other wires.

For some reason there's a song quality difference between cd's and when my iphone 4s is hooked up. The mp3's aren't **** quality but the volumes lower and the cds just sound so much better. Do I need that rip off of a iphone usb wire to get more quality rather than use the one that came with the deck itself?

I can't speak to the poor quality, but you can increase the source volume level. A different cable probably won't help.

I just put in an avh1400 and the wiring harness I had came with a wire to connect up an oem sub. I guess I don't recall for sure, but I was pretty positive it listed one in the manual... This is a very broad assumption though because its a different (but similar) head unit and different (but similar) car...

And before anyone states the obvious that cd's will always have better quality than mp3's I just want to state an example of my problem. I'll put a song on and it'll sound low, so I'll hit previous to whatever song is on before it and then hit forward back to the low sounding song and it'll sound loud. And also I noticed that sometimes the headunit will skip the first 3 seconds of a song.. Could this be bad firmware? It's not a huge problem but is kind of annoying.

either way with this unit, you will lose the push to talk function.
good to know. i tried manually programming the ASWC last night, and it would see the push to talk by itself, but not when i programed the on and off hook at the same time. I'd rather have on/off hook and no push to talk/ ATT functionality.

BTW great write up. I followed your guide and http://ae64.com/aswc-install.htm to a T, everything worked perfect.

The audio quality on the 4400bh is so much better than the stock Subaru one (it sounded like you were inside a tin can). With Loudness on low and powerful EQ settings there is a night and day difference between the two units. I wish the bluetooth streaming option on my android phone would send the track/tag info to the screen. But I mainly use my old ipod and use that interface for music.

Disregard this post, I think my iphone 4s's songs are deteriorating somehow, going to try some stuff to see if it fixes my dilemma. The headunit seems to be fine.

Can anyone else comment on this? I don't think I have an extra wire from SVXdc's harness labeled specifically for the subwoofer.

I think BoboTheMonkey is talking about the Pioneer's harnesses. They include the amp remote turn-on lead and RCA jacks for an aftermarket (not OEM) subwoofer.

There aren't any leads on the Impreza's factory radio harness (and thus none on my 20-pin install harness) related to subwoofers.

There are some Foresters with an OEM underseat sub that connects via pins on the factory aux harness. I do make adapter harnesses to retain that kind of sub with an aftermarket HU.

go here:

Looks like there's either BSM or a more manual method if BSM is turned off.
