"We have identified an issue..."
Really, that's all the explanation we get? |

ZOMG! We better all stop driving these new fangled contraptions that burn oil based fuels. They can just start on fire! Everyone knows when you expose them to oxygen and heat it is dangerous.
Anyway on a more serious note this is going to cost a decent bit to provide alternative transportation to all these people while they try and figure out what is going on. |

I hate to be an engineer involved in designing/testing this engine. |

I think the problem is that you've got a teeny 1.6t hauling around 2 tons of steel and it just wants to die.

The number of regular vehicles that light on fire is significant anyway. To top that and require this sort of recall it mush be pretty bad. They probably have some simple thing wrong that they just overlooked like faulty insulation on wiring or some tiny silly thing they haven't tracked down yet. Small mistakes can lead to big problems after all.

Really though, the first thing I thought after reading the full details was inadequate cooling system. Like, the engine working harder than anticipated for too long and overheating. Maybe need a new radiator and bigger pump pulley. But the chances of any car manufacturer screwing that up are nill. Probably a goofed sensor, bad thermostats or some such thing. |

I think the problem is that Ford in the past couple of years has really had a lot of reliability issues hence their 2nd last reliability ranking. I had to unload my 2012 Mustang because it was a steaming pile of hot garbage. Had to take a loss on a trade as I couldn't sell it privately knowing how many problems it had. I wouldn't touch a new Ford with a 10 foot pole. Something has changed with them over the past couple of years and all their models are plagued with problems. Lots of assembling and manufacturing of parts in China and Mexico.

Ford has always historically been "slow" to address recalls and the handling procedures with part allocation etc. I remember a few years ago a recall that affected the Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape vehicles. Mazda issued a recall several years before Ford had for the same concern and when addressed Ford said that they recommend the customer not drive the vehicle until they have parts available to repair the problem.
I work in the auto industry (dealer tech) and deal with recalls constantly and the manufacturer I work for is leaps and bounds better. I wouldnt buy a Ford product just based on how they handle these issues. |
