2002 2.5 SOHC timing belt replacement
I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get my hands on an
article from endwrench to change my timing belt I have done a search and found a good one for a DOHC 2.5 but was wondering if anyone has a link to an article or maybe even a post for a 2.5 SOHC timing belt replacement thanks james

I just changed the timing belt on my 2.5L SOHC Forester engine using the DOHC endwrench article. There is no difference except you do not need to lock the camshafts when removing the timing belt. Be prepared to remove the crankshaft bolt as the torque spec is 130 foot pounds and it appears to have a locktight coating on the threads which appeared to require ~ 200 + foot pounds force to remove it. The bolt size is, I think 22 mm and use a 1/2 inch drive-6 point impact socket and a breaker bar + 3 foot pipe extension. There is a inspection hole on the left side of the engine bellhousing (standing in front) that when removed will allow you to lock the flywheel with a strong screwdriver. I also removed the radiator and cooling fans as a unit rather than seperately. The job took me and a friend about 2 & 1.2 hours with a few short breaks. O-YES rotate the crankshaft (timing belt on) untill ALL the timing marks are aligned. The new belt will have lines on them for the two cams and crankshaft. I used a drill press to reset the tensioner and you must compress it very slowly to avoid damage to the 100 dollar part. WOW was I long winded but, hope it gives some insight.

do I have to remove the pulleys, I was just planning on changing the belt. I don't really want to get into changing all the seals. I may do the water pump. I guess it all depends on how it looks under the cover. i may just pop the covers off before ordering the parts to see if the seals are starting to leak.
i102spd that would be great. let me know when you have had a chance to look into it and I will get you a fax # |

Yes; you do need to remove the crankshaft pulley and the belt tensioner (to reset the tensioner). I also have the OEM engine manual and while useful the step by step from www.endwrench.com was better. I also changed my waterpump and did a seal check. Nothing showed any evidance of leaking so I replaced no seals. My waterpump seemed as new but, changed it anyway as I don't want to be replace it in another 20-40,000 miles. I used an OEM timing belt but, found a new Bosch waterpump at PepBoys for ~1/2 the price of the OEM pump. IMO Ed

i thought removing the tensioner would be enough to get the belt off
is there a specific reason why you have to remove the crank pulley other than if you were changing the crank seal |

thanks a lot i102spd
i just printed your pictures and as I was reading it clicked that I needed to get the pulley off to remove the timing cover I was thinking of the sprocket but I hadn't thought of the pulley for the v-belts. thanks for all the info everyone so no one has come across an endwrench article for a 2.5 sohc engine. my girlfriend has a 1998 imp. with a 2.2 and I found that one and I also found a 2.5 dohc article but no such luck for a sohc engine. |

Go back to endwrench....
Click on archives... Go to system search and select engine Mechanical.... Second listing from the top is "T-Belt Time: All About Subaru OHC Timing Belts" It has pics and diagrams of an SOHC in this article..... good luck... |
