Default Speculation: Is the 5-seat version of the B9X going to be a sedan?

I was just thinking about the prospects of the 5-seat version of the B9X. Perhaps it is going to be a large sedan version instead? Subaru has hinted at a large "flagship" sedan based on the same platform.

Thoughts? Discuss...

Umm, that would seem weird from a marketing perspective. There might be a sedan based on the B9X platform, but I don't think it would be called a B9X.

The 5-seater B9X most likely is just the same XUV without the last row.

Default I suspect...

the sedan will have a different last letter; perhaps B9R, or something like that. I think "X" will be reserved for crossovers. I would not be surprised if the next Forester is called a B5X, or something like that.

Yes, but EVERY Subaru wagon currently offers a sedan counterpart (Outback, Legacy, Impreza). Why wouldn't B9X as well since it is a large wagon crossover and Subaru has hinted many times about a large sedan? Perhaps we will get a sedan too (B9S?). Hell, maybe a sports coupe will spawn off of it as well (B9SC?)?

Just a thought...

A sports coupe based on an SUV/7-seater platform? Lay off the crack...

A sedan based on the B9X would most likely be what the Legacy sedan is to the Outback wagon. It probably wouldn't be like what the Outback sedan is to the Outback wagon - the Outback sedan is already pushing it in terms of ride height, and it doesn't seem to sell very well. Can you imagine a sedan with the same ride height, length, and design as the B9X?

Agreed. A new big sedan would be based on the same platform, but with a different ground clearance, body design, etc.

Yes, and in the case of the Outback, the so-called SUS (Sport Utility Sedan) Outback is a bigger loser than the Baja. According to a recent (Oct 24, 2004) NY Times article at http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/24/au...es/24AUTO.html:
Quote:
Both the Legacy and Outback come as sedans, but Subaru's strength is in wagons, which account for about 95 percent of Outback sales (but only about a third of Legacys).
Last month (Oct 2004) SOA sold 5,684 Outbacks. If 5% of them were sedans, then ~284 Outback sedans were sold last month, compared to 608 Bajas.

Please don't wish a B9X "crossover sedan?" on Subaru.

No but there WILL be a 'premium' (larger) sedan introduced after the B9X and it WILL use the B9X platform.

350Z/G35/FX35 all share the same common "platform". not to far of a stretch to consider subaru doing the same thing.

BigElm, you seem to have some inside info.
When "WILL" that premium/large sedan be available? I'm in the market for one right now. I love the previous version of the Audi A8 (called the D2 by Audi). I'll likely buy an Audi D2 A8 or S8, because I cannot wait for Subaru.

If Subaru could do a poor man's version of the prior Audi A8 or S8, that would be great. As long as they didn't skimp on the content (like they did on the 2005 Legacy), I'd pay $40K++ for it. With the new Acura RL out there now, Subaru will have to really do it right in order to effectively compete. I would rather spend $49K on the Acura RL than $41K on a Subaru that is missing some features. My point is that Subaru needs to do it at least equal to the Acura RL, and sell for less. Ideally, Subaru should do a car that is more feature-filled than the Acura RL, and still sell for a little less. Then they'd have a winner.

I'd love to see a discussion of what features everybody would want in a new larger Subaru premium sedan...

It's not really inside info; it's been announced by Subaru. I wouldn't expect to see it for at least another year, though.

I'd like a new larger Subaru premium ...

wagon!

The way I see it, Subaru still makes Impreza and Legacy wagons even though they have the Forester and Outback. The new big sedan should also have a wagon version. I'd like it to have everything I also want in a Legacy STi: 350hp H6tt, 6MT, brake and suspension upgrades, etc.
