I think I am going to gut my stock muffler and build a custom 3" exhaust that splits to 2 2.25" pipes inside the muffler. I'll see if I can't keep the stock chrome tips.

It will be uber sleeper. (at least when parked)

Unscrew that one bolt, and take the tips off then try.

That, or go for an STI muffler (which matches up to the WRX midpipe properly in terms of diameter)

LOL i wish i could, but when i tried to unbolt them, they snapped right off. i suppose i could drill them out, but i like the look of the tip. i've plugged them using my fingers, and another time using some glue, i still got the chirp.

ScoobyBoy, yea I know how you feel. I have a helix dp and uppipe mated to my stock catback and the muffler makes it chirp real back. I'm to embarrassed to downshift because that's when it chirps like a petshop. Lemme know when you rid of the noise without replacing it. Its an 03 muffler and I was wondering if an 04 or 05 wrx muffler with cut the birds throat.

the 04's are the same as the 02 and 03's. its the 05's, the single tip exhaust, that will get rid of the chirp. but as kosta has stated as well, the sti axelback would take care of it too. but ive been told the 05 axelback is the same as the sti axelback, just without the lettering.
blasted chirp. hahahaha

Cool. Thanks for the info. I had my eyes set on a 05 wrx muffler. The chirping is seriously annoying and removes the mean and angry sound factor. I want it stock looking but with an audio hint of seriousness. I'm also planning to replace my midpipe with a stomung intermediate and weld on a DMH electric cutout. It will be sweet

05 WRX muffler is not the same as the STI muffler. The STI has larger piping, is louder and presumably flows a little bit better as well. Though if you really want to fix the flow problem, you need a straight through muffler.

i had some questions about gutting a muffler. when people are doing this are you removing all the interior piping and the barriers or just the piping? either way does this still give a somewhat stock idle sound or does it end up sounding like as loud as a straight pipe. i have an 05 and was thinking about removing the piping but leaving the barriers as they might keep the volume down a bit. anyone have any takes on this?

wacerx

also a sound clip would be nice if anyone has one.

Well after much frustration and getting covered in black soot, and sneezing black carbon boogers for two days, mine is gutted. But... my welder just had surgery, and won't get to it until after Christmas. So, audio clips will be a bit in coming. But as for gutting, I got a RotoZip and used the metal cutting blade (nice and thin, and chopped right through it). Then I used (or should have started with) a sawzall to chop the inlet pipe. Between the sawzall, RotoZip, and metal chisel I got the bottom outlet pipes cut. You should be able to bang out the baffles. I cut my outlet pipes at different lengths to try and cut down on the drone, but my PhD in Acoustics tells me I should have done more math, and that they're too short anyway for the frequencies of interest. Anyway, it's a mess inside there stock, and there is significantly less mess now. More pics and audio/video clip to come. Stay tuned.

how loud was it after gutting?

I just placed a stock catback back on cause I got tired of the loudness. its bolted on to a catless helix DP but its makes a wierd noise when I shift from 1st to 2nd and sometime to 3rd. I see people complaining about a chirp but this noise is different to me. More like lots of air trying to escape all at once. wierd noise, cant really describe it.
I used an 06 wrx axleback with my 03 midpipe by the way. single tip is better than dual.

Me too, but it seems quieter to me than the dual, less rumble. Would be interesting to see what the 06 single tips look like on the inside.

Wow your car must be pretty slow now....the stock exhaust is bad ju ju...especially with what your doing...your going from a 3inch downpipe to a 2inch 03 midpipe to a 2.5 06 axelback...that's if the 06 axelback is 2.5 either way 2inch or 2.5 it's bad. Especially if you don't get retuned. IMO i would of just got a quiter 3inch catback or add in a bigger resonator.

if you hold a flashlight up to the inside rear of an sti muffler you can see its pretty much straight through...although it is resonated(you can see small perforations in the pipe that runs through and i'm sure there is some good amount of material packing around the pipe) i noticed a good difference with throttle response with the sti catback on compared to the wrx exhaust

Hmm.

To think, I went and picked up one of those and put it ON my car.

Hey, it was in great shape, very new, and free. And better than what I had.

So for now, I'll live!

i saw it when we gutted the muffler on my mother's car in SGP. but it's great to have photo evidence. they then ran a pipe full of holes from the "in" to the "out" and stuffed the inside of the muffler with some sort of packing.

just goes to show that the twin tips are for looks only.
