High pressure power steering lines- questions??
Our 2004 wrx wagon is pushing over 200k miles. Everything works fine but lately I am getting smoke from under the hood as she warms up. I noticed the power steering high pressure line is wet and have also had the hard steering happen off and on so I suppose it's time to get in there and rebuild and replace.
I saw the thread on rebuilding the PS pump so I have some new o-rings on order. Now I'm looking for the pair of lines that go to the rack. I confirmed with the dealership that the part number I need is 34610FE121. The dealer wants $425 for this pair of lines. I've searched the online OEM parts houses and many offer the lines as low as $285 (if you can call that low) but they want upwards of $100 for shipping!! I cannot believe that there is no other source for these lines. Maybe someone is making a custom line or retrofitting the high pressure rubber onto the existing hard lines? Not sure. Anyone have any ideas on this? The other rubber hoses are p/n 34611FE130-$82; and 34611FE050- $58.38. I think I can source those cheaper on ebay or amazon.

i have a business local to me that custom makes lines, it tends to actually be cheaper with the dealer costs than getting them custom made, at least with this company

Thanks for the response. That sounds crazy!
So, am I to believe that all of us are stuck with this crazy price for a simple part that is not that complex? I want to make sure that there are no other options as $400+ is a chunk of change |

at that price point, a custom built line would be more ideal, but it sounds like you're just interested in restoring it to oem. I think if you browse enough, you'll find a Subaru parts site that ships cheaper than that. try tascaparts.com

Look in the regional forum "Tri-state", there is a guy (top of page stickie?) that sells Subaru OEM parts. Ask him.

If you can swing it, the Chase bays gd power steering kit is pretty good. I recently installed it in my 04 sti and a brand new rack. No leaks and great steering feel.
Looks like they raised their prices significantly though. I got the kit back when it was around $380 brand new. Looks to be $500 now. That's for both lines 6an, fittings directly into the rack and a baffled reservoir. |
