Very loud, very obnoxious.
Remember how you put playing cards in the spokes of your bicycle, and how that sounded? Crank it up by a factor of ten, and that's what you get everytime the wastegate opens to vent exhaust gas from the impeller section. |

I think it sounds cool on some cars. Anyone have a sound bite of it on a Subaru?
What if you ran a seperate pipe back to where the other exhaust exets. Nothing big and nothing isible. Would it cut the noise down? Eric |

Definitely will get the attention of the police when it vents. You have an internal or external wastegate? If it's external, route it back into the exhaust downstream from the turbo.

I have an external and it re-enters the exhaust probably about 2 feet after the Turbo or so

Venting it to atmosphere prevents it from interfering with the primary exhaust flow.

like ben said...it keeps it from causing turbulence in the exhaust flow....VERY loud and yes VERY obvious

Also, it will often shoot flames, so select its exit location with care

Make a muffler for the second pipe. Take a section of pipe the diamiter of the wastegate exaust. Drill a bunch of holes in it, then make a sheet metal wrap for it with enough room for some fiberglass packing material. Weld the shell on with the packing inside. Bingo mini glasspack for cheap.

Mine is vented to the atmosphere. Then again I have straight pipes. No cat, no muffler, I love it.
Yes it is loud beyond belief. Kurt |

Mine is currently vented to the atmosphere. It's only loud once the wastegate opens up. Not as loud as a Harley though, but still too loud.

it's quiet and all you hear is the BOV....most turbo kits DON'T vent to atmosphere....i dunno about you guys but there are just WAY too many cops here just itching to write tickets for exhaust noise.

Yeah, I see no use for it. Of course, I don't like atmospheric BOVs, either.

The options are vent directly to atmosphere (essentially, the wastegate gets its own little exhaust pipe) or plumb it back into the main exhaust (where it can benefit from the sound absorption of all that extra tubing and the muffler). So, yes, eventually it gets to the atmosphere, the question is how direct that path is.

Besides the turbulence part, it's almost like running a bigger exhaust simply because the wastegate exhaust no longer takes up space in your primary exhaust, and at WOT, from everything I've read and heard throughout the years, there is alot of exhaust bypassing the turbo at WOT.
Although I've never heard a Sube dump the wastegate externally, I think it sounds absolutely fantastic on DSM cars. But to me, part of the fun of owning a turbocharged car is listening to all the cool sounds. |
