Thumbs up Evanston Subaru in IL!

All I can say is WOW. I got a 2002 WRX for $500 over invoice and it took less then 5 min of dealing. If your looking for a WRX, or any Subaru for that mater, go to Evanston Subaru and Ask for Matt Stevens. This guy knows his stuff. He's a huge car enthusiast and some of his stories will blow your mind! Also If you want a real test drive to show what the car can really do, he'll take you on the ride of your life.

I just bought a 2011 STI sedan from Mike. He gave me a nice deal. All invoice pricing ( NASIOC discount). I even got 2.9% interest, better then my bank. The NASIOC discount on the extended warrenty and maintenace plan is redicilous; I saved a few hundred dollars with it. Also a discount on parts and labor. If you are interestd in a WRX or STI talking to Matt is a must. He knows what he is talking about. Mike and Matt will hook you up. I am pi$$ed off though because somebody took some paint off my back bumper on the passenger side, had the car about 2 weeks. I guess ill have to get it repainted or something to cover it up; it looks horrible.

Hi Mike,
Need your help to advise the issue of my 11 sti? it's on 1~3 gear mostly every time I gas up to about 2500~3000rpm range and there is a paused half of sec., (like...the engine needs to thinking it should kick in the turbo or not) then it will went fine after 3000rpm.

This issue was started couple weeks ago but it's much more noticeable by now, I got my sti on Apr. which is only 3 months of new car.

Thanks for your reply.

NASIOC discount? Sorry I'm a noob and looking to buy a Subaru (Ohio), how does the NASIOC discount work, and do most Soobie dealerships honor this?

I picked up my 2011 STI hatch from Evanston about a week and a half ago. I ordered the car through Mike Olesnki and the communication was great throughout the whole process. He always answered my messages right away and was very patient with me to boot.

My ETA on the car was set for a week that he was on vacation, which made me a little nervous since I had been communicating with only him for months. He gave me the name of the salesman that I'd be working with, Omar, and I waited for the day to come. The car ended up arriving a couple of days after the ETA but he was very clear that this might happen so no worries there.

When I got to the dealership the first time (I am very impatient so I went on the day of the ETA) I was greeted by Omar, who was extremely friendly and helpful to say the least. He's a Legacy driver and I showed up with a friend in his '05 GT so we all hit it off right away. Omar's communication was fantastic as well the whole time I worked with him.

The car ended up coming in on a Friday afternoon (I'm 6 hours from the dealership, BTW) and Omar sent me a message as soon as it arrived. I told him I'd hit the road ASAP and get there with about 30 minutes to spare to fill out the paperwork. He got everything he could straightened out for me ahead of time and I was on my way. He also checked in with me along the way out to make sure I was still going to arrive on time, and all of this was on his day off!

The financing and warranty process was all straight forward and I was all set to go within 30 minutes of arriving at the dealership. I highly recommend Evanston Subaru (in SKOKIE) to anyone who is looking for respect, great communication and a great price!

^^^^^ Thanks for the kinds words!!!!!

Awesome picture repin' the Blue Tape front bumper! I tell my porters all the time to NOT drill the holes for the plates on the wrx/stis....but that always reminds them just in case :-)

So glad everything went smooth while I was out of town! You have my dream STi color/spec combination!!! Enjoy!

Default Thanks Mike

Wanted to drop a quick post and give Mike a sincere thank you and my highest recommendation. I am looking for a new 2011 base WRX and saw the positive feedback about him here. The feedback was very true, and although we weren't able to work out a deal (I'm out of state, and inventory is tight right now), he was very forthcoming about what he could do on price/inventory and very helpful in my search (actually found the car I wanted at another dealership, and referred me there)! Highly recommend to those looking for a great buying experience!

Thanks again Mike,

Geoff (still looking, so keep me in mind if some base WRX's pop up)

Call PandLMotorsports. Get a stage 1.5 tune done. All the awkwardness from the stock tune will go away, you'll add a few more ponies and wonder why you didn't do this the day you picked up the car!!!

More kudos to Evanston Subaru. One of the best car buying experiences I have ever had. Ethan and Mike were extremely helpful and worked out a deal I was really happy with. They were more then willing to trade with other dealers for the color/package I was looking for. Luckily the exact car(premium swp sedan) I was looking for had just arrived and was sold to me within hours of it rolling off the trailer. I am really happy with my first Subaru.

Consequently I live very close to an un-named dealer near schaumburg. I wanted to put money down on an incoming wrx and they wouldnt let me test drive any of the 4 used 08+ wrxs on the lot untill we negotiated and signed on a car. They also looked at me like i was crazy when i told him 3 other dealers were willing to take less than msrp.

Evanston is an hour away for me and it was worth it for the level service they provide.

So I made a thread for this in MWSOC, which was locked/deleted with no reason, so I'll assume it was because I put it in the wrong place. I'll write it here instead. I'll also try to be a bit less "emotional" about my review.

I have had nothing but great dealings with the front office of Evanston Subaru, and Mike is indeed awesome.

I have not had great dealings with the service center, unfortunately. Now I will state this is my *opinion*, and provide the data I am basing it on.

1st incident was on my 08 Legacy 2.5GT. I took it in for routine maintenance, which included an oil/filter change with synthetic. I got billed for it, and the technician happened to mention they put regular oil in instead. I was a bit annoyed on this one, and obviously didn't want them to drain the brand new oil (though I thought about it). Contacted Mike, after talking with service, and he talked to service and they said they'd give me a free synthetic upgrade on my next service. That never happened, as they had no record of it -- whatever, I moved on.

Second incident I took it in because one of the plastic undertrays along the driver's side of the same 08 Legacy was broken due to road debris hitting it. No big deal, I asked them if they could try to fix it, and if not, just remove the entire thing -- problem was in any cross wind at all it would start knocking around against the bottom of the car/ground. I explained this, in great detail, they said no problem. I got it back, they said they had fixed it. The reason I had dropped it off for them to fix this is I was about to drive 400 miles out of town, and didn't have time to fix it myself. Well, I hope on the road to start my trip, and it's immediately flopping all over. I had to stop on the roadside of 55 and jack the car up and pull it off myself with a pocket multitool. Not cool.

Third incident. I bought a Subaru extended warranty from them on my 09 spec.B. The finance guy (I forget his name) gave me all the options, the prices seemed reasonable, was generally nice. Settled with no haggling/annoyance on a warranty. Again, their sales/finance/front office is great. He threw in a "preferred customer" booklet, and explained to me that I got 25 free oil changes with it, I just have to pay for the filter + tax. Cool, I'm down with that. I asked him if I could bring my own parts in to make it even cheaper, and he said no, I do have to buy parts from them to use it. Fair enough.

So fast forward, I didn't have time to change my own oil, so I made an appointment with them to drop it off. I drop it off, in the appointment I told them I'd like synthetic. There will be an extra charge for synthetic. OK, I would expect that. Here's where my opinions differ with theirs, and why I'm annoyed.

Here is the coupon in question. I should add there is nothing on the back, and this is the entire coupon. Not terribly ambiguous. Being the bright guy I am, I'm reasonable in thinking "synthetic will probably have an additional fee, even though it does not say that."

Here is the bill I received

WOW - I'm thinking. OK, so I'm being charged $38.45 (7.69/qt) for the synthetic. Full price. Making a "free" - filter + tax oil change come to $45.04. Their logic is obviously that if you want synthetic, the only discount you get is the $8.13 in labor is free.

What I would expect? I would expect to pay the DIFFERENCE in the cost of synthetic to conventional oil. Say the synthetic is 7.69/qt, and the conventional is 4.00/qt (reasonable?) - that makes 3.69/qt difference. 5 quarts of that, OK, additional fee would be 18.45.

Anyhow, this is my review and my opinion. I don't like it, and they say I should have asked first, etc. Fair enough, caveat emptor and all that. I won't place blame with anyone but myself here, but it is a review. Take it as you will, and caveat emptor to you.

For anyone else with this booklet/coupon/offer, maybe it will help you avoid being surprised as I was.

Cheers.

I also do apologize to Mike -- you are awesome, and you do great things for the local Subaru community. This is just purely a review of my experiences with the service center there.

I would like to respond to ShadowIMG personally in this response, not as the "dealer"...but I do not have a personal account.

The first incident you point to was 100% our fault and a silly error.

The second incidence you point to doesn't seem like an issue. It sounds like you advised them to try and "fix" it, which they did. I am sure they offered to replace the piece for you completely, but that was not an option you gave them. Most likely because you didn't want to pay for the new pieces that were damaged...
Quote:
I asked them if they could try to fix it, and if not, just remove the entire thing
This third issue bothers me personally, mainly because your "other thread" was a complete overreaction with severe wording over something you failed to do: ASK questions.

When any customer comes in and asks for synthetic the computer system bills out the synthetic at our retail price. We do not buy synthetic in bulk like you think we should. As synthetic becomes standard in more an more cars we will likely start stocking a much higher volume, thus the bulk pricing will bring the costs down. You made several assumptions, and are upset about how you would like us to do business, but there was absolutely 100% nothing "shady" or wrong about how your oil change went down. You didn't ask how much the synthetic would cost. You didn't ask if you would be charged the "difference" for the oil. You asked for synthetic and were charged what everyone is charged when they come in and ask for synthetic.

The reason the thread got deleted was your demeanor and choice of words used to "bash" my dealership for a situation we had no control over. We did not decieve you, we did not try and put one over on you. You made assumptions, and then made a very bashing thread because you were charged for what you asked for. I was PMed by a Mod about that thread before it was deleted, and would have preferred if it stayed up, as even another poster who works at another Subaru dealership came in and explained that our pricing was spot on for a synthetic oil change.

To boot, you were told you cannot bring your own "parts" for an oil change, that does not mean oil where I come from. Our Finance Managers tell you you cannot bring your own "parts" because we will only use genuine Subaru oil filters/crush gaskets. Had you asked about bringing your own oil, anyone would have told you that was cool.

You know damn well (pardon my french) that I am on here, and that you can ask me questions about anything. (You have PMed me in the past about non-sales related stuff) Had you called me (even my cell is on my posts), emailed me, or PMed me I would have explained and looked into the matter for you. You made a choice to instead make the thread you made, which was a poor choice (imho). ****, had you got a hold of me I would have likely gone FAR above and beyond what was needed, as that's just how I roll normally.

Service departments are FAR from perfect, but this negativity over this "issue" is absurd to me. How many dealerships reach out to the tuner community like we do in Chicagoland? How much time and MONEY do we spend trying to welcome everyone to our dealership for meets/barbeques/shows? How many Subaru dealerships offer 15% off all parts and labor just for being a member of an online forum?

Despite all that we now have to worry about negative reviews because someone didn't ask questions and made assumptions?

Next time you have an issue over 40 bucks, especially when you requested that oil, and never asked how much it would cost, think about the repercussions of making a bashing thread about it, please. I was ready to dismiss the entire situation after your bashing thread was deleted/locked, but to see you in here writting another essay does not sit well with me. (even with your nice words about the sales department thrown in)

Mike, for the most part, I write this review because I feel it's something people should expect.

My experiences before Evanston Subaru are with Lou Fusz Subaru in St. Peters, MO and Webster Groves Subaru in St. Louis, MO. Indeed another service tech did chime in and say the prices were spot on for what they charge. I still, respecfully, disagree. Both the dealers I have previous experience with charge far less. Perhaps it's because they are already buying synthetic in bulk and have been for some time.

I do actually have every confidence that you WILL go far above and beyond, because you are that kind of guy, and you worry about the reputation of the shop. However, I write this review because this is what the "average guy" can expect. I do not ask for special treatment, because I review them on how they treat everyone -- not just people who identify themselves as special. That may not matter to anyone else, and I tried to be clear on every point here, and to leave absolutely nothing ambiguous, and let people decide if they care or not.

My demeanor was indeed out of line in the post in MWSOC, as I was pretty annoyed. However, the information was not false -- it was just unprofessional wording overall.

How many Subaru dealerships offer 15% off all parts and labor just for being a member of an online forum?
As far as I know, none. I do not know how much time and money is spent, my guess is a lot. You guys are awesome for the community, and I will not in any way discredit or cheapen that. I do feel that your service department has a completely different view and position than your sales side. I do NOT get the feeling that they care at all, or have any interest in Subaru as a community. When I take my car in to them, I feel like I'm dropping it off at a quick lube. I don't trust their work, I have to check everything they do every time. That's why I took the time to write this.

I would love to see you guys improve things in the service side. I would love to see them embrace the community as your sales side does. I do not want it fixed specifically for me -- because how you treat one person isn't important. Anything that you would do specially for me (and again, I believe you would, there is no question in my mind) I would expect them to simply do for everyone, always, with pride.

If you think that there are no service centers at dealerships like that, I would invite you to have a chat/meet Liz Smith at Lou Fusz Subaru of St. Peters -- absolutely everything I suggest & expect from a service center is based on the service I received from them. I'm a very picky guy when it comes to doing work on my cars, and I could actually pick my cars up from them trusting everything was done exactly as it should be, and for a good price.

Since one of the main complaints I would have with online reviews is that when things go bad, you get posts, when things go well/as expected, nothing gets said. Everything always looks biased towards the negative from that. So, a followup:

I had to take the Legacy in for warranty work, the HVAC blower fan failed on me rather spontaneously. One minor gripe is they are still overworked/overloaded there, as it took a bit over a week to get the car in (glad it didn't happen later in the winter, no heat would've been a problem!). That said, when I did take it in, for the first time the service advisor showed interest in the problem. I explained what was going on, he actually took the time to walk over, get in the car, and observe the issue. As soon as he heard it, he called a tech over who was walking past to have them also listen. He sat in and immediately said "Yeah I know what that is, fairly common problem." For the first time in dropping my car off there I felt confident I would not get a call back the next day saying "We couldn't find anything wrong."

Sure enough, the next day they called me with an update saying they had confirmed the issue and the part was on order and would be in the next day.

The next day they called me to tell me it was ready.

Nothing fantastic to report, but nothing negative either. This is more what I hope for in a dealership.

I put down a deposit this week with Mike for a 2012 wrx. I could not be more pleased! Mike was entirely straight forward and above board with everything. He also offered to help me out with a vehicle to drive if my current vehicle sold before the new car was in, totally above and beyond what I expected.

I just bought a 2012 Impreza hatchback there. I requested a quote by e-mail and got a reply from Evan early in the next business day from Evan. The quote was well below the "what others are paying" amount listed at Edmunds.com so I went in to check.

It turned out a different package best suited my needs and a got a similar deal in about a minute. What impressed me is the dealer hold back was quoted and taken off the quote. Other dealers I've dealt with in the past didn't even admit to ever hearing of a dealer hold back.

I hate dickering and liked the good offer right off the bat and that the method of arriving at the offer was clearly outlined. It doesn't hurt I can walk there from home. So far so good.

Thank you for the kind words. We try our best to be straight forward and offer very competitive pricing. I can't understand why a dealer would pretend like they don't know what a HoldBack is...that stuff is all over the interwebz anyhow.

To the bolded we can also pick you up and drop you off if it's cold out (or hot).

Thanks for choosing us to be your Subaru dealership!

Picked up my 2012 wrx hatchback last night. Great dealer to work with. Mike was very helpful when I test drove the car and then I worked with Derek who had excellent communication. Loving the car!!!!!
