Hes also running a torqued performance map, not a Cobb ots... You'll need to purchase that map separately...

I really find it amusing that people pay $600 for AP and then an extra $85 for a TP map when you can get the exact same map for $181 + $85 if you get tactrix openport.

I can give you a lot of reasons.
  • If you are going to stage your upgrades, it allows you to go Stage 1, Stage 2 very easily.
  • If you are going to be protuned, it drastically cuts down the amount of time it takes the tuner to tune your car. This means less billable hours on the dyno. This gets multiplied if you are planning on staging your upgrades and want to be properly tuned along the way. The savings there can outweigh the the extra cost. I know for a fact that most major shops charge more for opensource tuning than they do for AP tunes.
  • The AP is about more than just flashing your ECU. It is an extremely efficient way to clear/read codes, do data logs and other functions without having to carry around a laptop.
  • You can also, on the fly, change maps very quickly for different gas types or situations. Last night, I used it twice to flash the valet map on the car and then brought it into the restaurant with me. Poor valet guys couldn't get into boost!

Long story short...it is a small computer that goes with you everywhere. It can be hidden in the car easily and mounted if you want to do logs or monitor various parts of the car...and I would rather carry around an easy to hide $600.00 AP than my larger $3,000+ laptop in the car...especially when you get the added benefits the AP provides.

And a picture...since this is the picture thread. The AP mounted for data logging (before my interior and a lot of my mods were done).

They are fine and generally made really safe to try to accomodate so many different cars (which typically means they make less power as well). Mine did knock a little bit on the OTS Cobb map, so I talked to Eric at TP and did a little e-tune until my protune appointment came. Since then, my car has been protuned for stage 2 and everything beyond that since there is no such thing as an OTS map for turbo and other upgrades. As a general rule, OTS maps are made on the conservative/rich side on purpose...but...that does not mean they are safe on all cars. Whenever you tune any car, you should do data logs and monitor the car's health after the fact to make sure that everything is running the way it should.

A properly protuned car (by a reputable tuner) is just as safe or safer than OTS maps and they generally put out more power as the map is specifically tailored to your vehicle. Of course, all of that goes out the door if you tell your tuner that you want as much power as possible and you don't care about reliability. Good tuners have this talk with you before your car even spins one wheel (whether protuned on the dyno or e-tuned).

Happy motors make power.

And a picture since this is the picture thread.

I probably wouldn't for stock. I would just get an AccessPort, flash stage 1 and then wait until you at least have a downpipe for the protune.

monitoring feedback knock on these cars is crucial to keeping the motor healthy. AP is worth it for that feature alone...

First time messing with Lightroom with my crappy 10 MegaPixel Point and shoot. I should note I have zero photography experience and my artistic ability is limited to stick figures. I wanted to get some shots before the new wheels though. 18x9.5" Titanium Chrome Grids are on their way from the Dude.

How much MPG are you able to get on your TP stage 1 map? I was on that map for a few months before I flashed to stage 2. I never really kept track of my mpg then but on my stage 2 map I'm only getting 21mpg with a mix of highway + local. I'm thinking about going stage 1 again and throwing on the stock downpipe until gas prices go down lol.

If I drive all highway going 65 mph I'm able to get 25-28mpg if I'm lucky... as soon as I get into boost it's all gone haha.

I get 17.7 with strictly city driving and the occasional highway pull... Took a few trips back and forth to help a family friend move with combined city n highway a few days in a row and got 24 or 25 IIRC... That was also babying it and shifting at the recommended shift points

I do agree with a lot of your points though. The AP is a great option for many people. I do think open source is usually cheaper though. But the AP is definitely more convenient. I have intermittent logging problems with my laptop/car. Makes me want to get an AP sometimes...

I don't use FFS and launch control.

1. A lot of people (myself included) use OTS maps until they mod to the point they need protunes or until they know they are done modding. So either way...it still makes the beginning process easier. I put a stage 1 map on my car week 2.

2. The Cobb AP is used in conjunction with the Cobb AccessTuner software that makes tuning cars much easier...especially Japanese cars (Mitusbishi, Subaru, Nissan). Don't make assumptions about tuning when you have zero experience with it.

3. Why should have have to put my laptop in the car? Should I have to carry it in the car 24/7 then? My AccessPort is in the car and doesn't leave the car unless I go into a restaurant like I mentioned above. That means it is always available for code clearing, logging and monitoring. Not to mention, it is incredibly easy to mount in the car securely. It has only thrown a code once...and I was out of town and my AP was in the car. The vacuum line under the intake manifold that Subaru does not put a clamp on from the factory blew off.

4. Yes, Openport does have logging, but a laptop is not as easy to secure and see xluben's post above.

AP's are used in everything from older Subaru's to 1,000+ whp GT-R's. There is a reason for that...

So you can keep your laptop and cable, but making comments like everyone else is stupid for buying a $600 piece of equipement is unwarranted. The benefits outweigh the costs for most users. So go back to arguing about quad tips being dumb and make more LOL and DERP posts. You are better at that...

1. read what I said, I said I don't understand why people buy AP and then pay for a different OTS map, to me on of the benefits of AP is that you get free stage 1 and 2 maps to use until you mod further or you can stick with them if you are satisfied

2. So I take it you have extensive experience tuning with romraider?

3. again you don't need to have your laptop for logging, how often can you possibly throw codes and I would NEVER let a valet touch my car again..lol

I'm done with this. Everyone can see you don't know what you are talking about and you just go around to every thread trying to start arguments because you enjoy it. I guess you are smarter than all of the reputable tuners in the country.

RomRaider can't read codes. You might as well just unplug the battery if you want to clear them without knowing what they are.

If your'e going to buy a Tactrix and a laptop specifically to do all of this, I would definitely go for an AP.

It really comes down to trying to save a little money for a setup that is either the same or worse in every way.

Some of the stuff you are saying is simply not accurate, has nothing to do with my tuning experience. Being able to log without a laptop is a fact, it has nothing to do with experience and one you are done logging with AP you will need to hook it to a laptop to actually tune it with accesstuner... Eric of torqued performance likes OS and he is so reputable that people buy his tunes to replace Cobb's tunes...
