And to your point, it mostly depends on what you want out of the Jeep. The TJ/LJ is much much simpler than the JK, less comfortable, and proven reliable. I really wanted something super simple in the modern age of everything electronic, so I went out looking for a TJ. I wish I had gotten a LJ Rubicon, but that is another discussion.
Both can be wheeled at a very high level, but the TJ/LJ will require more $ to get to the same level as the JK due to tire clearance.

The 4.0 has one benefit that no one else ever mentions.
The torque comes on way down low. Its the beauty of an inline motor. Of course this is also why I really wana develop an electric jeep. |

you know, that is a very good idea. how much capacity do you really need for a day on the trail? plus you have the ability to keep the weight down to improve stability...

To give you an idea... the Tesla Roadster weights 2723 lbs. The Lotus Elise, 2006 lbs. Very similar cars save for gas vs. electric and a 700 pound difference. |

yep. I used to teach people how to drive stick on mine. I'd start by having them just work the clutch; no gas. This would teach them the engagement point and how to do it properly so as to not buck the drivetrain. The motor didn't need throttle to get the thing moving...just let out the clutch and you'd inch forward.

No trans, no axles, etc... v shaped I beam structures using cv shafts. 1 motor in the front 1 in the rear, planetary drives built into the motor for single speed gear reduction. Then use the battery packs in long flat configuration which becomes the floor pan of the body section. The clearance would be outrageous, 30% of the weight would be unsprung, while that sucks for road course, its great for wheeling, and the loss of all the motor etc... would still be lighter than a stock.. with a much lower center of gravity and higher clearance, and a completely flat bottom with nothing to hang it up... no pumpkins, exhaust.. etc. You get the idea. I worked it out at about $30k to build. |

I don't know if I ever mentioned but when I was in my searching/buying phase I encouraged my mother to get a JK as she was done with her LR3 and wanted something with better reliability.
Funnily enough, like me, she had fallen in love with the Sahara Tan paint and when I told her it had been discontinued, she went on the hunt, found one and bought it. Well I just saw it for the first time the other day when I swung through Nashville for a few hours on my way to MS. First off, it looks ridiculous, especially since she put matte black JK style rims on it. It just oozes functional and military. The new motor has a welcome amount of power but I'm just not crazy about the Pentastars at all. It just makes the car feel like any other SUV and lacks the grunt of the old I6. Regardless, it will be mine when she tires of it in a few years. It will be nice getting my hands on a family owned vehicle that will have never been wheeled or modified. |

Thinking about getting a late 90's Land Rover Disco I. I can find them for less then $3k in my area. I know they take premium fuel, get ****ty mpg, and can be expensive to maintain. Plan on using it on the weekends for 4wheeling shenanigans. Anyone here have experience with them?
