Question What are Jeep/Chrysler dealers going to do with their cars after June 9th?

So with all the Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealers closing, they have to get rid of their new inventory by June 9th. Apparently it is illegal for them to sell the vehicles after June 9th because the law says they can only sell cars for which they own the franchise. Since Chrysler is discontinuing their franchise, that means they are stuck with their inventory. Most other dealers are fully stocked and won't take the cars, and sales are slow ... so they are stuck with all these cars.

So my question - does that mean I go in an offer $10k on a $28k MSRP Jeep Wrangler Unlimited? Or are they are going to sell the cars to wholesalers or something?

Nope...big transport trucks will come in and pick them all up and take them back to the factory.

I wish they'd just liquidate the inventory. Some money is better than no money, no?

Pohanka is apparently making some deals. I don't know how low they are willing to go though.

Wrong, Chrysler does not have to take the vehicles back and will not be doing so.

They'll auction them off to liquidate as much as they can?

You know what's awesome is one dealership going out of business around me was unwilling to deal on a new Challenger for my dad. Who's laughing now?

I'd like to pick up a Wrangler Unlimited, but don't really have the desire to do so until next year when I have paid down more debt. But if I can pick one up for $12k or so ... heck, I'll do it.

I started a thread about this last week and sent inquiries to nearly every Jeep dealer in VA/MD that's closing about a Wrangler Unlimited. They were only giving good deals on '08 models and then it was only about $1500 off what you could get an '09 for (spec'ed how you want instead of leftover auto transmission choices).

Bottom line - most have cleared out their inventory already - anything left will get auctioned off with Chrysler providing special financing to other dealers who buy up the stock. No real deals to be had despite the media blitz to the contrary last week.

that would seem logical, but no. If they did that, it would effectively 'lower' the prices of all new vehicles across the country and screw all the dealers still in business.

Actually, DarCars did lose a few. I saw them on the master list posted in the thread I created last week.

i understood that the stock at most dealerships is purchased on credit from the manufacturer so wouldn't chrysler still own most of those vehicles by default?

Funny thing is I doubt it. They're probably trying to get as much out of what they have. I can't even get anyone to deal on a used car for me.

Wow, when you see the list, and know these dealerships, it really makes it hit home.

I can't imagine driving around and these dealerships not being there any more.

depending on how long it's been there, yes. not sure what the terms are but if dealers are sitting on six month old SKU's they have written a check for, they're morons.

<---Works at a ex-Chrysler dealership.

We've already sold off most of our inventory, and apperently we will be working with Chrysler to sell/trade our remaining vehicles to other dealerships.

The way I figure it they might be better off selling it to a consumer for $12k rather than having to liquidate it at auction. With who knows how many thousands of vehicles hitting the auction block, I am sure the prices would be super low. It's not like people are exactly clamoring to buy right now...
