You can drive a dogbox on the street. It takes some time to learn. Search under the name PLAYER. He has a downright wicked Impreza and uses an Modena (what MRT sells) box on the street. The downside is pretty much no one else will be able to drive your car. You have to double clutch downshifts, etc. Upside is the Modena set is evidently quite tough regardless of your attitude about keeping it alive.

That's a downside?

I've been tossing around in my head which tranny to go with once I start really pushing the power levels in the car, and I'm leaning more and more towards a dogbox. They're more difficult to drive, but if you can take the time to learn to drive stick, I think you can take the time to learn to drive stick better (which means not relying on synchros for everything).

In short a Dogbox is a straight cut gearset with no synchros.

And not to be rude, but take a look at the dogbox trivia thread and you will be up to you eyes in info.
AKA..

DO A SEARCH

There are hardly any people I know besides the people in my imediate family that can drive my car. It mainly stinks on trips because I can't let someone else drive and take a nap

But other than that, I'd rather nobody be able to drive my car, especially those theives!!

Haha, could you imagine the noise it would make someone trying to sneak away with what they didn't realize was a dogbox?

One downside is that if you miss a shift and, say, go to first instead of third, the dogbox will do it, no question. You can over rev your engine this way and cause damage.

How about the noise? How much louder is the dogbox? Is it unbearable?

It is definitely louder, but bearable.

I drove the MRT dogbox in SubeTek's 2000RS with 4.11 diffs, and it was quieter than the same gearset in Mark Ramirez's 3.9 diff equipped 98 RS-T.

It takes practyice to not grind with downshifts, mainly when braking hard, but upshifts are a piece of cake.

Question

when you upshift with dogboxes, do you shift normally like u would with an ordinary gearbox with syncros?

so the only difference with dogboxes is the rev-matching when downshifting correct?

Here it is.

2 driving modes available to the user.
1)Girlfriend mode.......double the clutch rev matching up and down, for smooth effortless no-crunching gearchanges, still a quick change comparable to synchro box, not hard on driveline, clutch or anything else.

2)HOLY SH@T mode, clutchless shifting, back off knock it into the next gear nail it again, no clutch, also crunch free however will tear the centre out of a sprung centre clutch, eventually break something else other than traction (half shafts).
This is a truly awesome experience and as soon as you get good at it, couple of weeks you will just drive around anhiliating everything on the road, you have no shame, dial up whatever you like, dump or slip the clutch and you are well on the way to 3 seconds 0-60mph and 60foot times in the 1.3sec range.

Unspeakable mode, lazy slow shifts will demolish the dogs in no time, lots of crunching, not a very pleasant thing.

Noise is fine (I love it)

There are no-other alternatives worth speaking about, the PAR set is rubbish and the ALBANS MRT synchro box ain't nothing like their dog box(Modena)

PLAYER - Please stop trashing the PAR synchro gear sets since you have no evidence that they have had any problems. There are at least 20 sets here in the USA and none of them has had a failure.

I am pushing 360-400ft lbs through mine with no problems!

The PAR synchros cost $4,000 AUS (approx $2250 USD) + S&H

i have a question...

say if..

Im on the street about to race at a light and i dont want to use the HOLY SH@T mode and risk breaking something later on..

I launch at about 6,000 RPM and when i want to shift to 2nd gear, i have to rev-match and double clutch it?

I can't just clutch in, shift to 2nd at 7,000 RPM, clutch out, and gas it like in a regular gearbox?

ok thats my precise question on upshifts with a dogbox. thanks.

It's actually easier to not clutch it at all but yes you can use the clutch (double it method or it will crunch)

A note I did 140,000K and 40,000K with 350+Hp 10,000K with 420HP and never broke the stock shafts, I replaced them with Possum Bourne Motorsports ones as a matter of precaution, I dont know the exact point at which the stock shafts will break but its lots.

I agree with you Larry, but we haven't heard a single review from anyone with these synchro sets except you. Why don't you convince your 20 customers to post about their experiences and thoughts on the gearsets.. what mods/torque figures they are running and such.

I might be ordering a set for a local heavily tuned WRX soon, but he's leary and no-one has bragged that they are great except you (the seller). We're looking for someone who is no biased and forked out the $2k+ for a set and are running near you figures or even a little less.

I like the idea of them, and hope to get a set, but the lack of reviews from all these owners has me leary.

Can someone point me in the right direction on how to rev-match?

I assume the rpm varies per car? per gear?

Thanks

Bill

Default Double Clutching

I'm not a manual tranny driver but wanted to understand what 'Double Clutching' is. Now I feel like an expert on it. Instead of explaining, read here:

Double Clutching

It seems like a very good read. I understand what double clutching is now and why it is necessary. So Ha!

just some input

from what i've heard, with the MRT dogs, it's not nesessary to double clutch during downshifts because of something in the place where the syncros are. I have asked this on here and got a few feedbacks on it.

I'll bring it up again.
