Marks are not from the brake calipers. There was plenty of clearance and I would have heard/felt any contact. I also looked over the other 3 wheels and they have the same marks in the spokes. Probably normal. In any case the update is that Enkei called and requested that I send them the other three wheels. Not sure what they are going to do with them, but they are going to sell me a replacement set at cost. So its still an expensive "oops", but at least I'm not out $1100 to get a new set of RPF-1's.

I had an Acusump blow it's top and Mecca cut me the same deal. At cost seams to be SOP. Still better than a sharp stick. Did they offer to show you photo micrographs of the fracture zone? They don't want those other wheels out there...

New update...
Finally got everything figured out with Enkei. They checked the 3 other wheels I sent back and compared them to 12 other wheels they had in stock. Nothing looks cracked or out of the ordinary. They are returning those 3 wheels and sending and replacement for the broken one. The cool/scary info... They sent the broken wheel back to the main office/R&D/analysis group and they ran a bunch of tests. After taking measurements, running material analysis, and looking at the crack under microscopes they've determined the cause for the break. The outer portion of the wheel was twisted with respect to the hub mounting surface. The spokes were physically bent. Some extreme amount of cornering force caused a misalignment between the rim and the hub of the wheel and the spokes finally gave out. |

s000000000000000.............the design isnt stout enough for the conditions encountered and associated hardware(tire) that was used....ie too little wheel for too much tire and vehicle weight????? |

You must be using some sticky tires and 3 wheelin' into a corner pretty good there. So now you have 2 sets of the same wheels?

I can think of two possibilities... 1.) I bought the wheels used and its possible that the previous owner had beaten on them a bit and it simply took this long for the wheel to finally give out. 2.) There is one auto-x event I ran on an incredibly f'd up lot. There were two points on the course where the bumps were big enough to get the front end of the car airborne. Its possible I had the wheel turned going into one of those and caused the bend when the car landed. |

Once again wheels are a wear items. This is why most race teams replace or service (inspect) at regular intervals.

Seriously though. Must be pretty weak to just twist like that from normal driving. Surprising. Seems like they took care of you though. Wouldn't really stray me away from them. I've owned a set of SBC RPF's before. Such beautiful wheels. |
