Platinum Autos sold broken head STi :[
Hey, what course of action should I take? I got the car for $15,800. Pretty clean 04 STi with 75k mi. I really want to keep it . When I got the car the engine oil wasn't changed and the radiator fluid was pretty low. I bought it like 3 days ago. Had Jon at Outback Auto check it out and he confirmed bad head gasket... Is this so bad that I wouldn't want the car anymore? Or should I just try to get the dealer to pay up whatever Jon quotes for the repair? Any advice is appreciated. FYI I got out of my negative equity from my Kia Spectra by buying this, considering how cheap it was.
Thanks, Drew **UPDATE** Ok, well I don't think its a bad gasket now. Heres the info. The car runs fine and idles fine. If I get the RPM to 4k it will start to overheat and then drop down as I'm driving, so I keep shifting before it gets to 3.5-4k. I replaced the thermostat last night, when I press the TMIC Spray I can hear it but don't actually see anything (Does it spray if the hood is open?). It might need a bit more burping but I don't think that this is the issue. As I have already done alot of burping to it. So my current guess is either water pump which I will test today or something with the turbo cooling system. Any thoughts?

Did you buy the STI "As is?" If so, it's your problem, but the head gasket isnt too big of a problem

Yeah "as is", I didn't think it was too big of a problem but cost to repair :/... I'm broke. I just bought an STi...lol. I thought you get 30 days in the state of washington to return a used car or re-negotiate if said car is in need of major repair... The Lemon Law?... Not sure though... I didn't google lemon law yet.

Washington could be different, but lemon law applies to new autos in Oregon. You could always call the dealer to fix it and see what they say, the worst they can say is no.

As is means its yours, and if you are that broke from buying a STi then prob not a good car to buy for you. Sorry to be neg but STi's get expensive, I have owned 2 and can tell you even doing your own mods can get pricey, even with stock issues like ring landings and such...
Reason is even the most minor repairs like head gaskets, in regular 4 cyl cars the engine can stay in the car however in a subie it has to be pulled and its alot more work. Hit up PIA in spanaway as they are a great resource for the subie stuff and they are a honest shop... |

So when you bought it, the car ran fine? Dealer had no knowledge of previous issues.
Or, you knew ahead of time it was in need of repair, found out the cost, now realize it was a bad investment? If #2, you're ****ed. |

Just because you bought it "as is" doesn't mean the dealer as no liability. My parents bought a used car a while back "as is" but it ended up having transmission and brake problems. My parents got a lawyer and the dealer ended up paying for all the repairs.
I don't know how much your repairs are, but if they're a lot then I might consider consulting a lawyer about it. |

This is another reason to do a pre buy inspection.

When you buy a car "as is", you're fullly aware of its condition and to the owners best ability everything is in working order. Unless otherwise stated. Just because you buy it from a dealer doesn't mean it comes with a free warranty. Quote:

Agree'd with the pre-buyers inspection. I still think it was a good investment, I'm not really broke I just don't want to pay for repairs 3 days after I bought the thing. Even if I can't get the dealer to pay up for the repairs. Jon from outback auto said it runs from about 1500 to repair it. It is my dream car and I've spent a lot of money on way more stupid things. If the dealer doesn't pay I might just pay for it myself the car is in sweet condition except for that. When I test drove it, I couldn't tell anything was wrong. Its got all stock parts except the car probably had modified parts and they just put the stock back on.

So anyone want a case of beer and some company to change a head gasket? lol... I spoke to the dealer I need to call him back in a couple hours. He said he'll talk to someone and see if we can split a warranty for it or something like that... Hes probably packing up shop and moving his dealership :/, I'm sure this will all get figured out.

Do you know the history of this car?
The front end got screwed over pretttttty bad and the dealer got it like that then had it fixed somewhere. As for the head gasket-What can you expect? The car was beat up to begin with. |

Yeah I know. I've noticed alot of things off about it... like most of the front end was repainted but the frame looks good. The dealer called me back and said he'll pay for all the repairs, he said that the car was sold as-is but he bought a 90 day warranty with all his used cars.

Since you had john look at it once, wouldnt hurt to have it look a little deeper, maybe compression test, hook it up his PC, throw it up on a lift and get a good look at the frame. And have him look at anything else you think might be suspect before you agree to have the head gasket done... Better shot of the wheels? Looks blurry for me.

Ive gone through some similar issues with another dealer when i was younger. I even had a pre purchase inspection done but i wasnt near home or anywhere i was familiar with and it wasnt a very good shop.
If i learned anything you have to research every little aspect of the used car being looked at, the dealer and even the shop you take the car to for inspection. Looking at your pictures the wheels scream previously modified to me, as well you have that napa radiator hose which says yes its had some "maitenance" done. Last thing is why would you buy a car, an sti that you know(?) has had front end damage and looks like its been repainted? SAlvage title? The car i purchased ended up having a salvaged title and i was conned into buying it, dealer slipped the agreement and notice in the paperwork after i had given him the loan check... the crap we do when we r young |
