TFT Dash LCD
Just finished installing my LCD in the dash of my Baja. No cutting or drilling required. Screen fits flush once the din pockets are removed. I used some hot glue to hold the screen to the frame while I installed it but once the frame is on it fits tight enough that it doesn't need any additional epoxy. Pics:
I'm thinking about adding a center channel speaker behind the screen and pointing it downward towards the ash tray. If I remove the ash tray and build a 'scope' to direct the sound it might work. The DVD player is only temp. until I can find a good deal on a better one. Last edited by braveit1; 10-24-2003 at 10:17 AM. |

that looks good. not many cars are blessed with triple dins. it's awfully convenient to still have the headunit and screen on the dash unlike the wrxs that have to relocate the hu to the gauge pod up top.
any zoomed out pics so we can see the view from the backseat or even any one of the fronts? |

Don't have any back seat pictures yet but I'll take some later. I'm going away this weekend so I have to post the the pictures on Monday. I've had some friends play Pac-man from the back seat without any problems. At first I wanted to put the screen on the top with the HD on the bottom din but the screen wouldn't fit. It requires the extra 1/4 inch around the bottom that is hidden by the dash frame. As far as the view from the divers seat, the screen is really bright. no problems at all unless you count my polarized sunglasses. I can't see anything if I turn my head sideways. When the screen is off it looks like there is just a black pannel.

very nice!! I've done the same thing just my alpine unit is underneath rather than ontop. However i am curious what screen you used i had a tough job of machining a frame to attatch the screen to the surrounding stuff. Also how is the contrast? visibility infront and in back. I didn't leave good enough alone and had to mess with the adjustments one last time now it's really great for the back seats but the front can't see crap. Ohh that reminds me where did you mount the dvd player? or is the din unit cabable of dvd? I put mine in the arm rest.
cool stuff i thought i was the only one trying to bling my baja monkey- |

My head unit has the DVD player built into it. So all I needed was the Headunit and the screen. I have the Farenheit T-7000MHR screen. I think it is slightly taller and a little wider than the T-7001MHR. It also only has only a single video jack (my headunit has an aux video jack as well as the video out.) and there are no buttons on the screen at all (can really use them anyway.) Since I only needed the screen and the single video jack I just got the 7000 and saved a few bucks. I also 'extened' the aux inputs from the back of my head unit and am trying to decide where to mount them. Since I didn't have the option for the heated seats I'm thinking of placing the rca jacks where that useless change holder is below the stick shift. I could also mount it neat the floor vent on the passanger side but after my trip this past weekend I noticed it was a little hard to get to with another passanger sitting there. I also thought about behind the center console. Any thoughts? I still need to break out my camera to take pictures from the back seat. Any shots of yours spacemonkey? What other mods have you got? I want the snug top and will pick one up next time I drive to Tampa or South Florida.

hmm i guess i never did take picks of my setup. I'll do that as soon as time allows. As for the auxilliary rca jacks mine are coming out of the center console where that wannabe ashtray would have been. Perfect place really. I have both audio and visual imputs there. Then when i want to run things off a laptop or another audio source i have the option of stowing that object in the rear center pod thingy(yes very technical term i know).

Yes there are three Din pockets. The radio occupies the top. In the middle is a pocket with a door and on the bottom is an open pocket. You could essentially order the double din cassette deck HU with the extra six disc changer all in the dash. Or you could get the stock HU, 6 disc changer and add a gauage pod. On the Baja classic the drivers seat is power and the factory sub is under the other seat. Doesn't leave much room for an aftermarket amp. Does anyone else have any upgrades on their audio system and if so, what have you done?

I was thinking about putting a Alpine 4 channel under the drivers seat. And then putting a w00x unit under the passenger seat. My reasoning was the power drivers seat would not have enough room under it for the w00x unit. Although i have'nt had the time or the extra $$$ to attempt it yet.
I would also be very interested if any other Baja people have upgraded the stereo system. |

Hey all. I was wondering if any of you thought of putting a LCD Touch screen and GPS navigation system in?

I thought about the Nav system but I honestly don't need it. I have a GPS for my palm and rarely ever use it. It was fun for the first couple of months but got old quickly. I guess if I had time to camp or backpack I would use it more. I have friends that have the GPS system in their SUV's and they have it off most of the time. It would come in handy if I ever needed to find a place but I don't think they're worth the investment right now for me.
I think I'm going to mount a small two channel amp under power drivers seat for the factory sub (under the passengers seat) to give it it's own power. My HU has a low pass sub out and the factory sub comes wired to the front speakers (Hi-Pass.) Sucks if you want to turn the volumn down in the front and up in the back seats. I would really like to know if anyone has upgraded the speakers or added a sub and where they were able to put it. I have (no pictured) added blue neons under the dash to give it a nice 'glow' on the floor at night. I think i'm going to replace the dash light with blue when I get the chance. |
