A few things I have created lately
Well Ive been on a real fabrication kick lately and I thought you guys would enjoy seeing my creations.
I began with making some fender braces to replace the very flimsy stock units. Then I decided I wanted to make a master cylinder brace. Then I finally broke down and bought a tig welder. I had wanted one for quite some time and it just so happened that our local custom motorcycle shop was selling one of theirs. So I picked it up and promptly taught myself how to use it. At first it was a bit weird, but I quickly got the hang of it. Now I can't put it down! I love it. So, I thought I would weld of a sort of cage style brace to stiffen up the hole rear of the car. I made it out of aluminum. Next im going to make a catch can, and maybe some under-car bracing

I sanded, scuffed, then clear. Coated it. I like the raw finish look. In the trunk I mounted it to these holes that went through the "frame rails". They were covered by a small sticker.

I would be very concerned about that brace if you get rear ended with passengers. You're going to transmit a lot of energy directly into the back seats.
Also, the rear cross braces should run all the way up to the front - having them pick up the middle of those tubes reduces the stiffness by a significant amount. Triangles are what you're after. If you have an opening which is not a triangle it's going to be compromised. |

The way I have designed it in the rear, it should give out under a large hit before causing harm. It was too large to build as one unit then bolt it it, so instead it is 2 separate pieces that are joined together. The joint is a small sleeved section on one side and a half section of tube that slips over top of the internal aluminum rod, then bolts in. This area along with a couple other areas should result in a a crumpling under a large hit.
I couldn't run the x-brace all the way up because of the sections that needed to be cut to make it removable. Thanks for your concern. Safety was in my mind when I was creating it. |

Glad you like them. Really I've just self taught myself everything. I have a huge urge to constantly learn new fabrication skills. I just love to make things and say that you created them.

which tig welder did you get? I'm looking to upgrade my diversion 180, just need to be able to adjust settings when doing aluminum. the auto set for frequency's is the only down fall. your work looks good, how much time have you spent tig welding?

I have a Lincoln SquareWave 175. It doesn't have a TON of features but it seems to be doing just fine for me. Maybe in the next year or two i will upgrade.
Thanks. I really have only started tig welding last June and only use it when im I have that feeling that a have to build something haha. Here are my other latest items ive build. -My Gtspec strut bar that I had laying around would always contact my intercooler so I kept the mounting plates from it and fabbed up my own support/tie bar. -Also here is a camera stabilizer/rig I made for videoing. |

Nice work! I'm getting ready to buy a tig in the next month or so and have been debating on the Lincoln square wave 175 or something with more power like the miller synchrowave 200 which is 600 or so more dollars but i do want to be able to do some thicker aluminum nothing crazy tho

Ya it is always nicer to be able to have headroom for welding thicker material, but preheating can help solve that issue. I know preheating has helped me in certain situations.

Good point, do you have any regrets with your machine?

No regrets at all. I'm very happy with my machine. With that being said, If I had a ton of money I would have gotten a more capable machine but at that point I'd be spending thousands above my budget.

My advise is to take classes whenever you can. Self teaching is a good way to learn bad habits. I give you this advise form personal experience.
