Post FWD to 4WD conversion on a Rally breed XT-6 (questions)

I need your help Scooby specialists.

<IMG SRC="http://fp.geocities.com/omahasubaru/pics/omaha_meet_1/Chad_XT6_front.jpg" border=0>

I'm working on a project car with my friend to set it up for a ClubRally (maybe). and we want to convert his 1988 XT-6 FWD auto to the 4WD 5speed set-up from the same model XT's.

<IMG SRC="http://fp.geocities.com/omahasubaru/pics/omaha_meet_1/Chad_XT6_frntcrnr.jpg" border=0>

What all is needed. We've got a deal on a used XT-6 4WD 5 speed tranny, but know we'll need more parts than that (want to figure out what all before we go and buy the tranny). Like the rear and center diff's and rear drive shaft. Will the front diff need changed too? What all is needed and Tranny aside, anyone have an idea of the cost?

Thanks,

Jon & Chad (Rally Enthusiasts)

Do a search....JK!
I think you would need most of the same parts an Impreza would need to go from Front to All wheel drive. So thats tranny, x-member,driveshats, diffs (front & rear matching), 1/2 shafts fron and rear....gas tank, etc......ECU too.

Ok, I haven't taken a look under a FWD XT6, but I can guess.

I would bet that you would be much happier with a RX tranny. Its the same one but with closer ratios, and a close spaced dual range. This is if you are running near stock power. If you plan on turbocharging it the XT6 tranny will be better.

The tranny already has the center diff in it. I wish you could check to see if the diff lock is working, as mine is not working right. It will not nither lock or unlock. So it just drags.

You will need figure out a way to get the rear arms for a 4wd. I can't tell you exactly but the XT rear arms might work. The 2wd arms ARE differnt from the XT. What I would do is find an XT6 parts car or one in a slavage yard with an intact rear end. The brakes and what not need to be changed, and I think the rear 1/2 shafts are unique to the XT6. The tranny crossmember will need to be swapped as the Auto one is different. In fact looking through the collision guide I have almost all the part numbers are unique for the XT6.

I know of the location of TWO wrecked XT6's in El Paso, but both are at the rip off place. One was even drivable when it came in, as it only lost the pass door to a hit. The other was parked due to a fire at the fuel filter.

The front diff will be fine as long as the rear matches it. I can't recall if the XT6 has the 3.70's or 3.90's. The RX tranny is a 3.70, and the rear LSD diffs of this era are all 3.70's that I know of.

Good info.

By chance could you check on the prices of these XT6 parts cars?

Also I'd like to get some of your part number info that you have and see what you know about the intire process.

Thanks - Jon

My guess is the bastard would only take $1000+ in cash. Might be worth it for the black one with the door hit, if nothing else has been taken since I looked at it.

The other might go cheap as I already have the motor, and the front calipers/rotors/spindels are already rusted into a block of rust. The rest of the car looked fine last time, but that might scare him into selling cheap.

The collision guide is a bit flakey as some things it just lists as order by application.

Want my car? It's a 1989 XT-6 4WD auto.

I'm in the process of looking for a replacement. But any opportunity to sell it right away is always good.

From what I can tell, the drivetrain is fine from the tranny (auto) back. Of course I'd have to have a specialized Soobie mechanic inspect it to be sure.

If you're at all interested in the car, lemme know.
