I didn't see this mentioned - apologies if it was - but this was an "a-ha" moment for me, so I thought I'd share for future installers.

For the rear bushing: Install the front completely, put the rear on the stay, start one bolt a few threads. Then, you can use the stay as leverage to stretch the rear bushing the 1/16" or so you need to in order to get the other bolt started without putting any lateral force on the last bolt/threads themselves.

I fought with that thing for 15-20 minutes, then when I did the above, it was almost instant gratification.

Thanks for this tip, worked like a charm for me after struggling with it!

It was about $175 from Rally Sport Direct last year. It's roughly the same still for the shifter and bushings.

Ninja edit? I was like whattttttttt $37?!?!

It's was about $37 last year. It's somewhere close to that still. No other expenses to the kit and a simple install.

Try to get your car as high as safely possible if you don't have access to a lift. To take the heat shield off is a pain if your not jacked way up.

Other than that, don't over tighten the linkage bolt in the car. If you do it'll be louder and tough to shift. Just past snug is fine and a little loctite won't hurt.

Lastly, in a few posts above you'll read the explanation of the rear bushing install. It's tricky but doable if your read a couple tips people have added to this thread.

Cheers!

It's a pretty straightforward install as I had to deal with the STI's reverse lockout and that wasn't even a big deal. Just take your time and you won't have any problems.

Did the front bushing when it's all put together rock side to side? the stock washer only goes as far as the threads do, and the kartboy bushings dont completely fill that space. I had to put an extra washer to prevent this, but not sure if I should have done it

Mine did the same thing. Tom at Kartboy said its okay as long as it isn't a lot of slop. I've been meaning to shin mine like you did and haven't gotten around to it.

So I got around to doing my install today. Shifter itself was cake, like maybe a 15-20 minute project depending on how good you are getting the snap ring back in.

Then came the bushings..... 3 of 4 bolts off on the heat shield and then hit a wall. no tools I had (12 mm sockets) were small enough to get under that 4th and final bolt just above the exhaust. How did you guys get that last bolt off of the heat shield? I'm on Rhino ramps, but believe it can still be done.

With just the shifter, the car feels much more well put together, so I can't imagine what bushings will do. Less travel has lent to an overall smoother shifting feel.

I was able to do the install on regular jack stands so it's definitely possible on Rhino ramps. Just hand tools too but my car only had a few thousand miles on it when I did this write-up so the bolts were easy to get off. Did you have a problem with the location of the 4th bolt or just couldn't get it off?

I literally couldn't fit anything in there to get the 12mm above the exhaust pipe out, maybe a couple inches of clearing. Going to try next with a wrench but no pliars or socket would fit - yet videos show people with sockets getting under there easily.

The way it looked I would need to loosen the exhaust hangars to get clearance - at the time I didn't want to do that.

Car was bought used and I'm finding all sorts of performance products, speculating something with the exhaust is also aftermarket leading to less clearance

I just used a wrench. I also didn't bother taking the o2 out like some said. You can get the shield far enough out of your way without removing that.

The bolt circled here. I'll just try a small wrench.

I did this install a year or so ago and it took about an hour from start to finish to replace the bushings and shifter.

Lifting the front was enough for me to get under and do all the work. I have jack stands, but went with some rhino ramps and found that they provided more than enough clearance for me.

As for the actual install... I would actually replace the bushings before replacing the shifter. It is much easier to do the work on the front bushings with linkage out of the car, without a shift lever attached. I used this video as reference:

He removes the whole shifter linkage from under the car, making it much easier to remove the old front bushing and press in the new ones.

As for the rear bushing... get a good socket wrench with an adjustable head, as well as a long extension. With the wrench and extension I used I did not need to remove the O2 sensor. I just unscrewed the four bolts holding the heat shield and kind of jimmied it back and forth while I worked.

Oh yeah, wear gloves to save your knuckles from all the cuts you'll get from the heat shield.

Excellent post. I just bought the kartboy shift bushings and short shifter. Already have the SPT short shifter linkages. I pulled the front bushing out and went to try and pop the kartboy bushings in and one side goes in snug like it should and the other side goes in and is loose. The kartboy bushing can spin freely and fall right out. Has anyone experienced this issue with installing the bushings, and what can be done to add a little more to the diameter of the bushing? I have been looking all over and can't find a good solid answer for a fix.

I just installed the kartboy STS and kartboy front/rear bushings. This thread had me a little scared, but it really wasn't bad. The car is new so it was really clean underneath, which helped. I tried moving the heat shield around but it didn't want to budge, so I just took out the O2 and removed the shield entirely. Then I took the whole linkage out. I think this is the way to go. For whoever had issues getting the shield off - not really sure where you ran into issues, it comes right off with an open wrench.

Rear bushing went on pretty easy too - it just takes forever to ratchet in a click at a time.

Truthfully the hardest part was removing the ebrake cover. Start in the back and pry it up bit by bit.

I just unplugged the O2 sensor and pulled the wire through so the heat shield could come off, completely. That way i had more room to work. Was pretty simple to swap out the linkage and the bushings. I couldn't get the kartboy or cobb bushings in one side fit and the other the hole in the linkage. I ended up getting the perrin for the front and kartboy for the back bushings, kartboy short shifter and spt linkage. Very happy with the upgrades. I was fortunate enough to work on a lift.
