Default Where would one find a beater in NC/SC/VA?

Welp, I'm currently in the Charlotte, NC area and I'm trying to find a SUPER cheap beater. I'm a college student and own my 2002 2.5rs, but I really want to learn more about cars. That being said, I want a super cheap beater. My friend bought a 1987 Corolla SR5 for $400, and it makes me jealous. Only required a few parts to bring her back to about 80% reliability.

That is my goal. Uber-cheap ($500-800). Something to learn a lot on and not be afraid to abuse it a little.

My thoughts are:

85-89 VW Jetta
85-89 Corolla
200sx
CRX possibly. I'd like to stray away from Honda's, but it's possible.
Early 90's Subaru's seem too expensive, although I'd be desperate to work on an old 2.2 L.

Basically something reliable, but something that has decently-avaliable parts for maintenance. Just needs to be a manual. Otherwise, no requirements really other that it can run outta the place where it's sitting.

Any other ideas on beaters? Anyone have beaters to sell?

And the MOST IMPORTANT question:

Does anyone know some good places to get started in NC/SC/VA? Where good auction sites are? Websites? I've been through all the general places like autotrader, ebay, cars.com etc etc. Any good junk yards? Cheap sellers? I'm on a quest! I know its a hard price range to find something that is still running, but I need a hobby.

Thanks for absolutely any help.

Hey,

Your best bet is probably iwanna.com and the local paper b/c people don't want to drop a lot of money advertising a sub $1k car on ebay, autotrader, cars.com etc.

I went driving around last weekend out in the country and found several beaters parked in people's yards for sale. I actually have a beater civic now (35-36 mpg), but I gotta find something to replace it with before I can sell it.

edit: as for the suggestion for import auto salvage, I don't recommend them

I went up there back when I had my L wagon and I was looking for a drivetrain (wrx). They were suppose to call me (Larry Jr.) when they had a wrecked wrx come in or they were going to try to source one. They never did call me.

Luckily I was able to find a whole wrecked car on here.

But back to your search.... iwanna usually has some beaters for under $1k. I missed an $800 awd 5 speed impreza on there last week, unfortunately. I would start there. Also, check all 3 areas asheville/greenville/hickory. There are next to no subarus in Sptg/Grnville, but plenty in hendersonville/asheville.

There was also a $300 Neon runner, but the tranny was shot.
