I had a 2011. Sold it with 125k for $10k. Worked it hard. Had 0 problems. Then I bought a 2015 STi. 32k miles with one previous owner. It broke immediately: 2 trips to the dealership for misfiring cylinders, and one trip for a bad throw-out bearing and broken flywheel bracket that left me stranded on the side of the ****ing rode. I come to find out that the previous owner had $14k in repair work done after they tossed a rod. Pretty much everything but the windshield was replaced, and it still blew up again on me in defiance of all that is dealership. SOA branded that 2015 a lemon, and bought be a brand new 2017 STi. Awesome. I'm the only owner and everything will be ****ing fine, because I know how to not floor-it in 6th gear with 85 Octane in the tank. But now, I'm 58k into it, and my transmission starts to feel "sloppy". So I bring it down to the dealership to find out that sloppy it is, and they need to pull my car apart for 3 days. What the **** is wrong with these newer STi's? This is 2 in a row, with failures including the engine, transmission, and clutch. Are my problems common? Either way, I'm fixing it and ****ing selling it. Anyone want a 2017? Brand new transmission. Future problems guaranteed!

Update: The results are in! The rear transfer gears were loose and grinding in the case with metal n the dccd center diff. The transfer gears, races, seals, and dccd were all replaced.

Final update: SOA came through huge. They reviewed my case, and decided to cover all of the repairs. Hurray!

## Lessons Learned ##
1) Be upfront and polite with your dealership on your mods (I think mine went to bat for me).
2) Call corporate and bitch when things don't go your way... but bitch politely.
3) Make an intelligible case. Mine was "Stage 1 Cobb shouldn't blow up my transmission."
4) At the end of the day SOA saw I was a repeat customer, and wanted to keep it that way. I think this was the most important thing.

Great diagnostic description btw.

So you got a new 17 and 2 years later you have a 'sloppy' trans and they are fixing it under warranty I assume?

a) why are your panties so bunched up
b) what the hell does 'sloppy' mean?
c) I'm guess you haven't had a single other problem besides the trans otherwise you would have added another paragraph ranting about them, so why would you bail on a car with no other issues that just got a new trans?

panties are indeed in a bunch. "sloppy" is a term used by people who aren't mechanics. the frustration comes from major problems on 2 consecutive STi's. and the rant is intended to illicit community feedback.

This.

One rule I live by....when buying a high performance model (especially the top performance model) NEVER buy second hand. Chances are the previous owner had more money than brains and drove it like a 3yr old. Others may disagree.

I don't see a "sloppy" transmission as a major problem. Could be as simple as a worn shifter bushing or maybe you just aren't as good at driving a standard trans as you think you are and your synchros are on the way out.

Obviously they're replacing it, so I know for a fact that the diagnosis sure as hell doesn't say sloppy when somebody else is eating a trans for you.

And again, your first one was destroyed by some flat brimmer. A brainless moron can ruin any car, sucks you ended up with it but still has no bearing on anything.

so basically you got a used 15 under warranty, somebody trashed it and Subaru bought it back as a lemon
(headache no doubt but you were fully compensated)

Got a 17 brand new and now you're getting a free trans due to manufacturer defect

For all we know you were given a free loaner car too, so what's to be so upset about? It sounds like you have been fully taken care of this entire time.

Grinding noise on upshift? downshift? while cruising in gear? all of the above?

I have a 2017 with way above average mileage and its fine. I will say from my recent experience that I got downshift grinding on certain gears on aftermarket tranny oil once in a while that I didn't have on OE oil so I went back to it and now more grinding.

As far as the transmission is concerned oil and shifting style makes the difference imo. And everyone is vastly different with those 2 variables so who knows what caused your 2017 woes. I wouldn't blame the 2015 issue on the car though. It sounds like the previous owner was the issue.

sounds like your trans is due for rebuild drummer! i have some nice whine in mine...no cheese tho lol, but ya sounds like you are being taken care of with both of these! sorry about it being frustrating cuz you do buy a car to drive it...had 350z with tons of issues dealer bought back to avoid lemon and my first sti was in a paint booth for ~3 months due to rock damage to paint during transport. rx8 was in shop for ~3 months as well for random cutout at 8k rpm...throttle body was shutting (no signal or something) at that point...they had to fly engineer from japan to look at that one! so been there done that, some of my older cars have had to rebuild almost immediately...240sx headgasket blew 10min after i bought it...wasn't happy but had plan and engine available for swap so wasn't to concerned...

I don't think it does? I bought the car new and had no grind on the factory tranny oil, then got the oil changed per the schedule and that's when the grind began to happen on the new oil (motylgear) on 5 to 4 downshifts occasionally, not all the time. Drove it for a while to see when/what conditions causes it, but decided to not bother chancing it anymore and just went back to standard fill and haven't experienced that grind since.

I'd agree on the rebuild if an oil swap didn't fix anything, but it was clearly the oil that caused it. Seems like the synchros weren't getting up to speed fast enough sometimes with the slippery motylgear. I know people have had success with aftermarket tranny oil like motylgear or gear300, but some also have not and I fall in to that I guess.

Anyway, back to the OP's issues...

^funny, mine has random grinding rarely on the 5 to 4 downshift too
only that shift, all the others are fine

Oddly, it's when I'm driving most casually too, low rpm's and casual shifts, not slamming lightning fast or anything at all

My 16 STI did this as well. I couldn't even downshift at any decent rpms. I bought it used with 4k miles and thought since it was low miles, and under warranty it wasn't going to be a problem. Yea, never buying used again with an STI. After it getting annoying, I took it to the dealer. Of course they couldn't replicate the grind. Needless to say, I got rid of that car, and on the 19 STI have never had a problem with 11k miles.

I abuse the **** out of my transmission. 86k miles on my trans.

Multiple WOT and No lift shifts. bigger turbo, 30 psi, aggressive clutch. She takes it like a dirty whore

my 4th to 5th doesn't like high RPM shift. it grinds for a split second but it will still shift. been like that for about 15k miles.

No ****s given
