Default Help! Rough low rpm operation, poor mileage :(

Hi guys,

Just bought a WRX with 80K on clock and in the last couple of days it began running poorly at low rpm (who the hell rush hour test-drives a car anyhow? ). Basically it's hesitant to pick up under 2000 rpm, jerking pretty badly at constant throttle application. After that it picks up quite smoothly, but I'm sure that even if it has no low-end power, it shouldn't act like the engine's trying to break free and run away. The situation was helped a bit by a nice high rpm rip through the first gears, but it's coming back now . Also mileage is somewhere around 450 km/tank, which is kinda poor considering I was going on boost in rush hour traffic. I come from a Honda, and I know that if one of those behaved like this, I'd attack the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and fuel filter before thinking of anything else to fix it....I realize the Subaru's a completely different beast, so please help a n00b get the most out of his new purchase .

check the air filter and fuel filter (hard to check the latter - if it looks old, replace it). Also - check the MAF sensor to see if it's fouled and needs cleaning.

If none of these take care of the problem check: spark plugs, vacum lines, O2 sensor, and do a compression test on all 4 cylinders. There are a lot things that could make it do what your explaining. Without being there to hear or smell the engine its tough to say.

^^^^ probably everything listed above (in terms of replacing) - plugs, filters, etc. is a good idea for a car with 80k miles and an unknown history.
