Shoot, I don't know if it's quicker for me to get to Indy or Lousiville

Looks like really long drives to see a race for me this year. Probably not gonna happen.

Soo they're replacing the Supercar class with a spec-chassis?

Uh oh, this doesn't sound good... I get keeping costs down and making races more interesting than "VW wins!", but that's what makes rally interesting! Different manufacturers battling it out in the woods. This honestly makes me pretty sad...

I've always loved the marketing/sponsorship side of motorsports.

This may be the one of the most bizarre moves I've seen in the different series that I have watched throughout the years. It's almost laughable if it wasn't so ridiculous.

The only benefit I can come up with is greater manufacturer participation. Why do you think Dodge bowed out in '13 (besides the fact they sucked and nobody was buying Darts)? It probably became cost prohibitive to continue. If this move brings in 2 or 3 fresh teams, that would be a boost to the series, but at the cost of being able to point to GRC as a sort-of "race on Sunday, sell on Monday" series.

Even the cost of a superlite car by itself is almost $200k, then the money to pay a shop to run a team for a season along with advertising etc etc is a multi million dollar investment, im sure these new cars will be twice the price, maybe more. No car brand is going shell out millions to put their logo on a car that doesnt remotely look like something they sell. The dart setup actually wasnt a bad car if i recall, and i think we can all agree the race on sunday sell on monday thing is long gone unfortunately, those were the good ol days.

Whatís confusing about the announcement is that itís referring to the 2018 season. Can teams possibly be ready in such little time? SRTUSA has been testing over the past couple of days in their Supercars. I was going anyway to Buffalo and A.C., but now these are canít miss for me as Iím afraid this could be the last season for Subaru if this series is going in the direction Iím afraid of.

The way i see this, no GRC this year for Both Aktinson and Sandell, they are both doing stage rally this year. I assume picking up Martell was a move to keep them in the GRC loop?

Heres the latest media release:

Quote:
Subaru Rally Team USA Confirms 2018 American Rally Association Series Campaign

- Defending Champions will return to the ARA series with a 2-car team
- David Higgins 75 to return with a full-time effort with teammate Travis Pastrana entering select rounds
- Subaru will enter former WRC stars Chris Atkinson and Patrik Sandell at select rounds

Cherry Hill, N.J., February 15, 2018: Subaru Rally Team USA (#SRTUSA) is pleased to confirm it will return to the American Rally Association (ARA) Series in 2018 with a multi-car effort utilizing 2018 Subaru WRX STI rally cars prepared by technical partner Vermont SportsCar. The team’s efforts will be spearheaded by multi-time rally champions David Higgins 75 and co-driver Craig Drew 75, who will enter all seven rounds of the 2018 ARA series. Defending 2017 ARA Driver’s Champion Travis Pastrana and co-driver Robbie Durant will join Higgins in a second team car at select rounds, owing to schedule commitments with his Nitro Circus live-event tour. #SRTUSA will provide entries at select ARA rounds for former World Rally Championship star Chris Atkinson and former Junior World Rally Champion Patrik Sandell.

“Rally continues to offer both an exciting and challenging way to showcase Subaru production car technologies,” stated Subaru motorsports manager Rob Weir. “We’re fortunate to have a stable of proven rally drivers to complete a two-car team at all ARA rounds to defend our championship title.”

The 2018 ARA season kicks off at the scenic Oregon Trail Rally on April 20-22 where Subaru Rally Team USA will enter David Higgins and Chris Atkinson to mount their championship defense. The Australian rally star Atkinson is no stranger to Subaru’s motorsports programs. Between 2005 and 2008, he was the factory driver for Subaru World Rally Team alongside the 2003 WRC champion Petter Solberg. Atkinson has earned 41 WRC stage wins and 6 WRC podiums including podiums at the famous Monte Carlo Rally and Rally Mexico. Subaru signed Atkinson in late 2016 as part of the team’s rallycross efforts, where he was joined by Patrik Sandell last year, but neither driver has yet to enter any stage rallies on behalf of the team.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity to do a rally in the USA, having had a glimpse through rallycross of how awesome the Subaru fans are in this part of the world, the atmosphere will be amazing,” stated Atkinson. “It’s been a while since I’ve done a high-speed rally and I don’t underestimate the challenge, but know we have a great team and car so it will be fun. A big thanks to Subaru of America and Vermont Sportscar for this opportunity.”

In addition to the five returning ARA events the series will debut two new events in which Subaru Rally Team USA is looking forward to; The Idaho Rally (Sept 14-15) and the Tour de Forest Rally, based in Olympia and Shelton, Washington, (October 6-7). The revived Tour de Forest event, last run in 1983, represents an exciting new challenge for ARA competitors, placing teams on stage roads unseen in rally competition for thirty-five years.

The complete 2018 ARA Series schedule:
1. Oregon Trail Rally - April 20-22, 2018
2. Olympus Rally - May 19-20, 2018
3. Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR) - June 1-2, 2018
4. New England Forest Rally - July 20-21, 2018
5. Ojibwe Forests Rally - August 24-25, 2018
6. Idaho Rally - September 15-16, 2018
7. Tour de Forest Rally - October 6-7, 2018

Full coverage of Subaru Rally Team USA is available on the Subaru Motorsports App. Follow the team on Instagram @srtusa, on Twitter @srtusa, and on facebook.

Higgins is doing all ARA events. Pastrana had conflicts with Nitro Circus. Atkinson and Sandell filling in for Travis at just a few rallies. They are/were planning to do full GRC schedule and Iíve seen nothing to indicate they arenít but the GRC press release puts this in question. Looking for clarification.

Not trying to speculate or dream up any "conspiracies" or anything, but Dan Anctil's IG post AFTER GRC made the "no more supercar class" announcement makes this even a bit more interesting:

I'm sure if there are any other rallycross plans from Subaru, no one from the team can say anything until it is official. Looking forward to more info.

There is absolutely no news, statements, etc. from any teams or drivers. I was planning on attending Atlantic City and Buffalo and came very close to ordering my tickets but am holding off. No way I'm going until I know what and who will be there.

I have contacts at Loenbro and OMSE that I can ping. Guess I'm behind the curve.

Might just swing by the Loenbro shop as it's all of 15 minutes away from my house.

FWIW, on Subaru's japanese motorsport magazine site, they no longer have any information listed for the SRTUSA's GRC efforts as they did last year.

I hate to sound like "that guy", but, now more than ever, I'd love to see Subaru back in the WRC if it was possible. Rooting for Subaru in motorsports is awesome, and regardless of how the actual GRC series was run, it gave me, as a long-time Subaru fan, that excitement again.

The NBR24 is awesome, but it is only one race. The SuperGT300 BRZ is great as well but just not quite the same as a Subaru in a rally environment.

Hoping something comes of all of this.

Subaru is/was poised to get back to the winner's circle this year, so here's hoping that we get one more year before the changes take place. If that's it for GRC I can't help but wonder what effect, if any, that would have on their ARA campaign as Atkinson and Sandell might slot into the second car full time due to Pastrana's conflicts with Nitro Circus.

Agree on the Nurburgring effort. It's great to follow the lead up and the race is one of the best events of the year but there's a huge void/let down when it's over as you know there's a full year until we see the car again. WRC is what we all are hoping for but not holding our breath. Although, I remember reading about a new Subaru engine at 1.6 liters a few months back......
