Default 2012 WRX transmission/diff fluid?

I'm new to AWD cars. What is the difference between trans and differential fluid? Do they take different kinds, and if so, which kind?

Also, am I the only one actually afraid to take my car to the dealer to get a fluid exchange in fear of they will put the wrong fluid in?

The difference is usually in the additives. Some fluids have additives that help out synchros, some have additives that help out limited slips, etc.

For the WRX, TiC recommends the Motul Gear300 75w90 for both the tranny and the rear diff. For the STi, they recommend the same tranny fluid, but Motul 90PA for the rear diff because it has some LSD additives (WRX doesn't have a rear LSD).

Thanks. What's this "S" fluid I see some people talking about?

Subaru Extra S. You can buy it by the quart from vendors online or by the drum from dealers. I just used extra S in the trans and diff and called it a day. Works fine for me.

When did you change your trans and diff oil? Did it change anything?

Did mine at 28k. Didn't really notice anything different. Wasn't having any issues to begin with though.

Thanks for the info my friend. Much much metal dust/chips did you find on your tranny plug/drained oil?

I found a little gray metalic goo stuck to the magnets, nothing that concerned me.

I know you were asking the other guy, but I thought I'd chime in.

I swapped the tranny and diff fluid in my 05 STi around 30k with the Motul I mentioned above and noticed a VAST improvement in shifting smoothness, and a significant reduction in gear whine. I wasn't having any "problems" with the stock oil, but the Motul was still significantly better.

Thanks for that bit of info eggroll, I appreciate every input I can get. I see that you have a 2012 WRX, when would you personally change out the tranny oil? Also, do you know if it's customary to replace the tranny oil when the TOB and pressure plate are going to be replaced? My TOB is making the squealing noise at the engagement point, and the clutch pedal squeaks whenever it's pushed in. I have about 4.3k miles right now.
